Hi,
I have had several cases where a HDC1080 or HDC1050 humidity sensor has failed. The failed sensors have a low resistance short between VCC and GND, and in one case the I2C SCL pin also had a short circuit to ground.
These sensors are mounted on bare prototype PCBs that are used for SW development so ESD is certainly a possible cause as is physical damage to the sensor element (although no damage to the sensor is visible).
Can minor damage to the exposed sensor surface lead to a short circuit in the sensor?
