Drone Detection TI Sensor ?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1243, MMWAVE-STUDIO, MMWAVEICBOOST, IWR6843ISK

I have seen few post where people are asking questions regarding Drone position estimation and I have AWR1243 boost EVM , DCA1000 EVM  can i use this both for detection a Drone upto 15 mts ?

If it wont helps me. Please help me by suggesting a TI Radar which is capable to detection drones at 20 mts as I am interested to buy TI sensor for Drone detection (near by area 20mts).

Please do reply as soon as possible

  • Hi Teja,

The detect ability of an object depends upon it's RCS (Radar Cross Section) value which is a measure of the target’s ability to reflect Radar Signals in the direction of the radar and depends upon it's shape, size, surface roughness, type of object etc. In addition, you also need to consider the velocity of the target object.

TI mmWave Sensors may be able to detect a drone at 20m depending upon the above factors. Please look at the following post for a similar discussion:

Since you already have the AWR1243 and DCA1000 EVMs, you can use MMWAVE-STUDIO to capture raw ADC data and process it in MMWAVE-STUDIO to see if you are able to detect the given drone. Please look at the following training video to understand the data capture process using MMWAVE-STUDIO and DCA1000 EVM.

  • Teja,

Another easier approach would be to buy an MMWAVEICBOOST and IWR6843ISK antenna module board and run the Out of Box Demo that comes pre-programmed on the IWR6843ISK to see if you can detect the drone in the scatter plot in the mmWaveDemoVisualizer. You can also play with the Range and Doppler CFAR detection thresholds in the Visualizer using the Real Time Tuning Tab to increase or decrease the number if points detected for the target object.

Please look at the following lab for step-by-step instructions on how to run the Out of Box demo once you have the MMWAVEICBOOST and IWR6843ISK boards.

  • Final question is Can i able to see micro Doppler signature which is created by the drone blades rotation ?

    Please explain !

  • Hello,

We have not performed any measurements around this scenario so cannot say if this will work or not. You'll need to capture the raw ADC data and analyze it yourself in context of this application.
