IWR6843ISK: Some questions about the antenna design on IWR6843ISK EVM.

Part Number: IWR6843ISK

Hi TI experts,

I want to design my own hardware system based on the antenna form factor on iwr6843isk EVM, but limited by the size of my PCB, the GND plane around the antenna area can not be fully satisfied? A part of the ground plane and ground via above the antenna will be removed.

So I want to make sure that what is the purpose of the surrounding ground plane in the original design of iwr6843isk? In my design, a part of the ground plane have to be cut off so that the ground plane does not enclose the antenna area. Will this change the antenna parameters and affect the antenna performance.

Regards

Chenhui

  • Hello Chenhui,

Ground PTH acts as fence around the antenna. It shields antenna and RF lines from any unwanted interferences. It's difficult to comment but just looking at the structures, impact of the breaking ground shield around the antenna. To be absolutely sure about it's effects on the Antenna performance, Antenna simulations need to be performed.

    Thanks and regards,
