AWR1843: AWR1843 FOV for MRR, SRR and USSR

Part Number: AWR1843

Hello All,

what is the FOV of AWR1843 for different configuration such as MRR, SRR and USSR?

  • Hi Rajesh,

There isn't a hard and fast number for this. Our TI Designs mention "field of view of ±50° in azimuth and ±15° in elevation" in the automated parking TI design (link) and "field of view ±60°" in the short ragne radar reference design (link).

If you consider the FOV limited imposed by the angle estimation technique alone, that number is ±90° for our antenna geometry, an explanation of which is available in the mmWave training series (link) or the fundamentals of mmWave appnote (link).

The advertised angle is limited because the transmit antenna does not illuminate the objects as well if they are at angles(source). This has to do with antenna design and radiation pattern rather than the hard theoretical limit imposed by the angle estimation technique (which is indeed ±90 degrees for our antenna geometry).

As you can see, the FOV is limited by the signal strength. If the object is at a large angle to boresight, it might not be detected due to the detected signal being too weak. It is possible though that an object at the same angle closer to the device gets detected as the signal is stronger.

    Regards,

    Aayush
