DRV5033: DRV5033 use as limit switch on 3D printer

Hi,

My customer hopes to use DRV5033 to replace mechanical limits in 3D printer.

However, customer worries that the B-fied of all magnets cannot be consistent, so customer need to test/adjust  the position of magnets on 3D printers one by one.

Are these worries reasonable?

    Thanks for the question. Your customer is correct, you will see variation in the magnetic material, so this is a concern they need to address in such a solution. 

    I am hoping to get a little more information here. Do you know approximately at what distance the customer wants the switch to operate? Also, do you know what resolution is able to be tolerated by the customer for the switch itself? Finally, is there a specific reason the customer chose the DRV5033 here? Are they wanting to supply a voltage greater than 5V in their application?

    If they can work with a 5V part, a good possible solution here is to look at the ZE version of DRV5032. This device has a much higher maximum operating point of 63mT, where the variance in the magnet field will not be as influential with lower sensitivity parts. I ran a quick calculation for a 2mm radius x 1mm thick cylinder magnet below. As you can see, the operating point and release point are much smaller and very close together here, which means that regardless of the small variation in magnet strengths, the magnet will need to get very close to the sensor for it to trip.  With this in mind, based on your mechanical tolerances, you may not need to adjust the magnet position from system to system with this setup.

    I recommended DRV5033 to customer because it's used in TI reference design of 3D printer TIDA-00405.

    DRV5032ZE looks a better solution. I'll recommend it to the customer.
