IWR6843AOP: IWR6843AOP heat sink VS radar radiation pattern

Part Number: IWR6843AOP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWAVEICBOOST

Hello,

I'm wondering about the effects of the heat sink on the radar radiation pattern:

1 - Why does the evaluation board IWR6843AOPEVM mount a custom sheet-metal heat sink instead of a commercial one?

2 - Are  there some distances or sizes to respect in order to avoid problems in radar functionalities ( I see your custom sheet-metal heat sink is bent at the XI6843ARQGALP radar chip to increase its height up to about 5mm  ) ?

3 - Can the Wakefield-Vette 547-24AB ( https://www.mouser.it/ProductDetail/Wakefield-Vette/547-24AB?qs=VVKQmw408U8VHUNO6WsrFg== )  be a valid option?

  • Hi,

    1 - Why does the evaluation board IWR6843AOPEVM mount a custom sheet-metal heat sink instead of a commercial one?

    The custom heat sink was used to avoid have the shield in the field of view of the antenna and also to allow interfacing with the MMWAVEICBOOST without needing to remove the heatsink.

    2 - Are  there some distances or sizes to respect in order to avoid problems in radar functionalities ( I see your custom sheet-metal heat sink is bent at the XI6843ARQGALP radar chip to increase its height up to about 5mm  ) ?

    You want to avoid components in the field of view of the antenna, its about the distance from the IC and height at that distance. The AOP has a 120° field of view.

    3 - Can the Wakefield-Vette 547-24AB ( https://www.mouser.it/ProductDetail/Wakefield-Vette/547-24AB?qs=VVKQmw408U8VHUNO6WsrFg== )  be a valid option?

    Any heat sink that meets the above criteria and works thermally is okay to use.

  • Hi Charles,

    I am a bit confused about the point 2:

    1 - What do you mean by "distance from the IC" ?

    2 - What do you mean by "height at that distance" ?

    3 - With the sentence "components in the field of view of the antenna" , do you refer to the heat sink at on top of the XI6843ARQGALP (in front of the antennas) ?

    4 - I am thinking to put the heat sink at the bottom of the XI6843ARQGALP (in the other side of the PCB, like in the IWR6843AOPEVM ), in this case the field of view of the antennas is not compromised, right?
