Help selecting the right MCU controlled switch

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TS3DV642, TS3A44159

Hi, I'm a student working on a university Degree project and I need help choosing some electronically-controlled switches,My project advisor suggested I look at relays instead of switches, but I’d prefer using a IC due to my size constraint.

Basic requirement:

I'm looking at creating the microcontroller back up system were there will be two microcontrollers used one which will be the primary uC and one smaller back up uC. There are 12 digital inputs and outputs connecting the Primary uC to the rest of the system, is there a signal switch that will allow me to switch the 12 IO's from one uC to the other uC. I have added a basic diagram of what my system idea.

Any and all advice is welcome!

Thank You For Your Time.

  • Hello Ben,

The TS3DV642 is a 12 channel SPDT mux that can accomplish this.  It is designed for high speed HDMI applications but should be able to accomplish what you need.

    Andrew

  • Thank you for the fast reply the TS3DV642 looks like a great product but apart from buying 2000+ or getting a few samples i'm having a hard time finding a supplier.

Is there alternatiive product I get use ? ( I don't mind using a few of the same IC to active the same result as the TS3DV642).

    Thank You for your time.

  • Hello Ben,

Using 3 of the TS3A44159 is also a solution.  You can tie the select lines together to create a 12 channel 1:2 mux.

As for the TS3DV642 how many samples would you need?

    Regards,

    Andrew

  • Wow even faster reply ^^

I have just placed a sample order for 3off TS3DV642 but for future projects a bigger order maybe needed ( between 10 to 50 ICs), and have also been looking at the TS3A44159 as a alterative solution as well which looks like it will do whatt I want very well.

    Thank You

  • Hello Ben,

I'm not sure exactly what the maximum quantity  is for a sample order but I'd imagine you should be able to order more than 3.  I also don't know if TI will restrict multiple sample orders of the same device from the same account but you could always use friends to order enough for your project.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Regards,

    Andrew
