CCS error message when debugging

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3S818

Hi all,

I`m trying hard to debug any code into my Stellaris LM3s818 (which comes with DK-LM3S-DRV8312 development kit) with CCSv4, but everytime the following error message appears:

Error connecting to the target:
The target board you are attempting to connect to does not appear to be a Stellaris IDK and is not supported with this license. This license may only be used with the development board that is included with Stellaris IDKs bundled with Code Composer Studio.

I`ve been helped by some TI employees in other forums (http://e2e.ti.com/support/applications/motor_drivers/f/38/t/155796.aspx?PageIndex=2 and http://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/stellaris_arm_cortex-m3_microcontroller/f/471/t/160749.aspx); But my problem remains the same.

What can I do in order to check that everything is OK with my CCS software?

Thanks,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

what emulator are you using?  An external emulator?  The build in ICDI?

What version of v4 do you have?  What license option did you select at the beginning after installation?

Have you checked all power and jumpers?

    Have you tried v5.1?

    Best Regards,
    LIsa

  • Hi Danilo,

have you also made sure the drivers are working correctly?  What is your OS?   Do you see any issues in your device manager?

    Best Regards,
    LIsa

  • Hi Lisa,

I`m using the "Texas Instruments XDS560 PCI JTAG Emulator", that comes with the CD.

I have CCS version: 4.2.4.00033. I selected Platinum License and I have got the Stellaris-Development-Kit.lic (I have tried to replace this license for the other one TMDSCCS-HWN01A-v4.0.lic I downloaded from ti.com, but it didn`t helped me to solve the error connecting to the target).

About power and jumpers, yes. The LED`s are propperly turned on and the jumpers are in the correct place.

I`ve tried v5.1. The same error appeared.

    Regards,

    Danilo

  • Well, the drivers must be ok, because I can spin my motor without using CCS. I used the already done program Sandstorm_InstaSpin-BLDC-GUI_Vxxx.exe.

My OS is Windows 7 professional.

About my device manager, there is an yellow exclamation mark in the texas emulator (This device cannot start. (Code 10)). The ICDI drivers and the Stellaris virtual port are ok.

    Thanks,

    Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

the XDS560 or XDS510 are not supported under the free development kit licenses.

Try the on board debug interface and you should find you no longer get a license error.  Please keep us informed.

If you wish to use the XDS560 you will need a purchased and fully licensed copy of CCS.

    Please see this wiki topic

What did you mean? How can I try that? That`s my first time using TI products. Can you give me an example?

  • Hi Danilo,

pretty much every Stellaris kit has a debug interface already on it where you do not need an external emulator like the XDS560.   This is called the ICDI or Stellaris In Circuit Debug Interface.   If you connect CCS directly to this on your evaluation kit instead of through the XDS and try you should be fine.

    Note

    - check jumper and power settings.

    - double check the CCS license configuration.  You can go to Help->Code Composer Studio Licensing Informat and go to the manage tab.  You want the "Free limited License"

Hope this helps explain what to do/try.  Please keep us informed.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • How can I connect CCS to ICDI? Which tabs/buttons I have to press?? Is it better if I delete the XDS560 emulator from Device Manager?

I`ve already got a free license file (TMDSCCS-HWN01A-v4.0.lic), additionally to the original one (Stellaris-Development-Kit) but when I try to do the 2nd step in Licensing Options in Help Tab, no message appears! Although, my CCS shows the message "You are licensed to use Code Composer Studio". (I deleted the original license)

  • Hi Danilo,

it sounds like you are set then if you are coming up as licensed?  You did the right think getting CCS away from the license file you got which is likely for v4 anyhow.

Can you debug when it says licensed?  No need to remove the XDS from your machine.  Just your project if you have set this in the target configuration file.

As far as the ICDI .. it is usually the defaul so you should only need to find the correct USB port (well likley mini-USB) and plug it as well as the power to the board in.  Unfortunately I am no Stellaris guru so I will have to direct you to the documentation from your kit.

    Please keep us informed.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Danilo,

I just thought I would check to see whether there is any update with your enquiry.   Were the tips helpful?   Like I said, the Stellaris forum might be a better place for some of these items.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

Yeah, I installed CCSv5 and chose only the Stellaris Package in the beginning. Now, I can debug the ControlCard.

    Thank you,

    Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

ok, glad to hear and all the best with development.
