CCS v5 debugger global variable visibility

Just upgraded to CCS v5.1.1 from CCS v4.2.4.  When running the debugger I cannot view global variables.  The selection for global variables is grayed out.  Is there a special debugger configuration to enable viewing of global variables.  Did not have this problem with CCS v4.2.4.  Target is Stellaris LM3S2965 on custom board connected via the LM3S2965 eval board's ICDI.
