Multiple workspace directories

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CONTROLSUITE

Hi folks,

I recently installed CCS 6.1.3 on a new (win10) machine - CCS, nor any other TI program had previously been installed, though I have since added ControlSuite also.

I note that in my user directory there are now 3 workspace directories, named as follows: .\workspace, .\workspace_v6_1 & .\workspace_v6_1_3

Are all of them really necessary? Is it safe to remove any of them (they all have at least one or two items in them such as a .metadata dir)?

As it is there are already also CCS related directories in the user directory (.\ti & .\.TI-trace), directories in %AppData%\Local (.\Texas Instruments\CCS & .\Code Composer Studio) and a directory in C:\Program Data (.\Texas Instruments).

This is on top of the uninstall .exe. and .dat for ti_msp430pack6.3.4.4 being left in the root C:\ directory and some random user being created solely for a ControlSuite directory all outside of the supposedly self contained C:\ti directory in which CCS and ControlSuite are installed.

When a user installs other TI products as well (e.g. Fusion Designer, etc) this brings the locations of TI files & directories on a users system to an bogglingly high count!

Could at least some of these folders be collated or removed?

Moreover could the CCS development team please stop adding new directories willy-nilly all over users systems and instead use the multitude already in place (Or at the very least delete most of them upon uninstall instead of leaving them behind as is currently the case), or better yet actually reduce the number required?

Many thanks, T

  • That's interesting. I'm not sure why you have three of them. If it was indeed a clean machine, I'd imagine only the last one is relevant since that would be the default folder for 6.1.3. Are the timestamps for all three the same? Anyway, you should be able to delete any workspace folder you do not use.

As for all the various folders and files in your user directory, some of it is simply cached data that not only can be deleted, but sometimes encouraged (see #5 of below):
    processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Troubleshooting_CCSv6

But there is not a clear list of what can be safely deleted and what is not. That is a good idea - to much such a list public and up to date. But in the meantime, I would suggest leaving those folders alone.

As for all these various directories, yes it is an issue discussed before. We do have a plan to clean this up:
    e2e.ti.com/.../533083

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Ki-Soo,

The workspace and workspace_v6_1_3 have the same creation date (5th August), but oddly the workspace_v6_1 has a creation date 3 days later (8th august) than the former two.

Thanks for the cache files link!

Reading that other thread, I realise that I hadn't really thought of the registry - I hate to think of the craziness going on in there! o_O
  • CCS these days does not mess with the registry (much). Back in the CCS3.3 days (and earlier) when CCS was Windows only, it used the Windows registry a lot. But starting with v4, when it became Eclipse based, we moved away from it.
