TIDA-050045: Design Changes for 12V DC Adapter Input

Part Number: TIDA-050045
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS23753, TPS23730

Hi Team,
TIDA-050045 exactly matches our requirement except the "Adaptor input voltage range".
In TIDA-050045, Adaptor input voltage range : 37 V - 57 V
Our requirement : 10 V - 14 V(12 V Typ) DC Adapter, therefore DC-DC Converter Input Voltage Range - 10 V - 57 V

1)Please let us know the list of components in Primary Side of DC-DC that are need to be changed with suitable MPN for those components to meet Our requirement
2)Any Component changes required in other sections like Secondary Side of DC-DC & Opto Coupler Feedback Section?

  • Hi Rama,

Thank you for your interest in the TIDA-050045!
For a lower adaptor input voltage, could I suggest taking a look at this document, SLVA306. It mentions a specific IC (TPS23753) in the name, but it applies to TPS23730 as well.

    https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slva306a/slva306a.pdf

The TIDA-050045 is currently configured like Option 1, mentioned in the document, which restrains it to only 48V adaptors.
For your requirements, you would want to look at changing this configuration to either option 2 or 3. There are advantages and disadvantages to both, but it depends on what your design is prioritizing.

This adjustment will mainly just affect where the adaptor circuit is connected in relation to your IC and power circuit.

    Best,
    Sarah

  • In TIDA-050045, Adapter is ORinged using Option 2(Connected to RTN) right?
Option 3 won't suits for us due to our below requirements
    i)Transformer O/P - 5V
ii)DC Adapter Voltage - 10-57V Wide Range Adapter
Since our downstream components are with 5V input voltage range we cannot use 10-57V Wide range DC Adapter. So only Option suits for us is Option 2 which is used in TIDA-050045 designed for 48V DC Adapter Input Voltage.
Because of 48V DC adapter input in TIDA-050045 the input voltage range of DC -DC Converter is 37-57V. But as we are using 10-57V DC Adapter the input voltage range of DC -DC Converter changes to 10-57V.

So can you please suggest the list of components & suitable MPN that are need to be changed in TIDA-050045 for the change in input voltage range of DC -DC Converter from 37-57V to 10-57V.

  • Hi Rama,

Sorry, yes, you are correct. The TIDA design has Option 2.
No changes changes in placement then. The following components should be adjusted:

R10 should be changed to maintain a ratio of 1 : 5 with R11. A resistance of around 22 KOhms will suffice. (

R14 should be changed to maintain a ratio of 1 : 2.6 with R19. A resistance of around 38 kOhms will suffice.

    T2 needs to be changed to a DC-DC Converter with 10 - 57 V rating:

L3 needs to change to accomodate, to around 15 uH.
