TIDA-010208: TIDA-010208 schematic query

Part Number: TIDA-010208
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-010216, BQ76952,

Hi

I have a query need your help.

When using BJT in the TIDA-010216 circuit, the zener diode is placed between G-S of the MOS as shown in the figure below. The designs I have seen usually place the Zener diode between VC16-VC15, which not only provides ESD protection but also prevents AFE overvoltage from damaging the chip. I would like to know the purpose of placing the Zener diode here.

Waiting for your reply.

Thanks

Star

  • Hi Star,

The Zener in TIDA-010208 (NC in TIDA-010216) is used to protect the balancing MOSFET (Q15, Q16). You can still put Zener between VC16 and VC15 to protect the PINs. Just for your reference, BQ76952 supports 85V max voltage on each VC PIN, so normally we think it quite strong vs cell voltage (2V-4.2V).
