About LM2588 DC-DC CONVERTER

Hello everyone,

I am using LM2588 adj IC for boosting 12V to 60V. In the circuit, when i give power, it is not boosting. it only show zero at input and output.

I want to ask whether the design which TI design tool give, work or not????????????/

  • Hi Satish,

    1.  Go to the main TI website (www.ti.com) and input your power supply requirements in the WEBENCH® form on the bottom right.  Then, click start design for a single output.

     2.  Select  LM2588 from the list of TI devices that meet your requirements.

    3.  Click the “Sim” button at the top of your design.

    4.  Choose the type of simulation you want and click “Start New Simulation”.

    5.  Once the simulation has run, you can click on “Waveform Controls” to Add/Remove waveforms.

  • Ma'm when i give the input of 12V, at the input of LM2588 IC, I get the input of 12 v but at the o/p, I can not get the o/p of 60V. I see that the IC become very hot. What is the problem?
    Plz tell me.

  • Hi Satish,

    When you say you can't get an output of 60V, is that within the WEBENCH(r) tool, a different simulator, or on a test board?  If it is on a test board, be sure you have the input supply current-limited.

  • hello Ma'm,

     Its mean I have to use load at the output. yesterday evening, when I re-test the circuit, I have got the same output as I given at the input and IC became hot.
     What can be the problem????????

    I will need more information to know what is wrong.

    Could you post your design schematic and layout? (if you don't want to post them I can provide my email address).

    In the mean time, please make sure all connections are properly soldered on your board. I noticed in WEBENCH the design calls for a Heatsink, please make sure you have one attached to the IC or else it will overheat.
    Can you probe the SW node on the IC and tell if it is switching?

  • Hi Satish,

    It can be extremely hard to get a supply working properly on a bread board. The parasitics from the component leads and layout will introduce much greater inefficiencies  in the system. Specifically the extra inductance in the lines can cause large ringing in the paths that are high current. It is very possible that ringing on the switch node from this is causing damage to the IC.

    You can start by trying to tighten up what you have and see if that fixes anything. The link below is an app note that has some basic guidelines for layout:

    If you cant get it working on the bread board, you may need to switch to a PCB board.
    Digikey (www.digikey.com) holds an already made board we designed that should be able to do most designs with this part:

  • Hi Satish,

    If the IC was broken the switch may be shorted to ground at which you will see a full short to ground. If this is the case you should try a new IC.

    If the part is simply not switching, please check all your connections and make sure everything is in place.
