In the design : High Efficiency Universal AC Input to 5V 2A Adapter Reference Design

Is there any need for voltage surge protection device at the start of circuit? Similar to MOV or TMOV. We are planning to use the devices in India where there seem to quite some power fluctuations in the grid. Is such a additional protection indeed necessary/sufficient?

Hi, Veeramreddy,

As we know, there is bigger voltage flucturation in the grid. Therefore, when we design the power supply, we need to conider the maximum input voltage will influnce the components selection. PMP11600 is designed for adapter. For adapter application, there is no need to add MOV at the start of circuit in my opinion.

Thanks for the response.

By fluctuation in the grid, I mean that some of it is passed onto normal appliances also right? This is the situation we faced in some of the cases. There comes a surge of above 400V approx for a few moments suddenly. This in turn damages the capacitors on the input side whose ratings are somewhere around 470V generally. That was the reason I was looking for some sort of protection at the beginning of circuit.

Hi, Veeramreddy,

If the input voltage is above 400V for a few moments suddently, it is necessary to add protection at the beginning of circuit.
Either we need to design our power supply supporting more than maximum input voltage athough this method will increase the BOM cost.
