TINA/Spice/TINA-TI: Measure impedance and phase of a RLC circuit in TINA-TI simulator

Part Number: TINA-TI

Tool/software: TINA-TI or Spice Models

Hi all

I want to measure impedance and phase of a RLC circuit, but when I did AC simulation. The results always shown Gain and Phase

Could any one please show me how to setup TINA software for an impedance measurement ?

Thanks in advanced.

QCM Sensor.TSC

  • Hi,

Even though it says Gain and Phase, the title of the waveform is irrelevant. What relevant is that it shows body plot. Actually the title should have been changed to "Magnitude and Phase" rather than "Gain and Phase", but as I said the title itself is irrelevant.

You can use the technique that you use on your .TSC, but in this case you have to do one additional step by using resistor divider to extract your Z impedance assuming your Z is comprised of R1,L1,C1 and C2 and you intend to use R2 is a tool to get to Z, basically "Gain = Magnitude = VF1 = Z / (Z + R2) * 1  where 1 is the Voltage AC Source.

The easiest way to do this measurement is by sticking current source AC source into Z. Thus it will produce an output voltage of  Z * 1 where 1 is basically the Current AC Source. Thus Output Voltage = Z.

At the waveform, this means Gain and Phase Plot = VF1 = Z.  See attached.

    Hope it helps,

    Herman

  • Hello Herman

    Thanks for quick reponse !

    I am clear now.

  • Hello,

We need to do a small modification in the circuit. Instead of an AC voltage source, kindly put an AC current source at the input and simulate for AC characteristics as shown below.

This will plot the impedance at VF1 and its phase as well.

    Thanks & Regards,
