PMP20196: calculating step of this design

Part Number: PMP20196

Hi,

my customer need to design an isolated power stage, the input is 10V-100V, the output is 180V, 30W.

And they find the reference design of PMP20196 is very similar to their need.

But they would like to know how the parameters are chosen, especially the parameters of the transformer.

Do we have the user manual which describes how the parameters are calculated?

  • Hello Mr. Zou,

    PMP20196 is far away from your needs; PMP20196 is designed for 5V output;
    your needs are 180V output.

    To design the power stage I would strongly recommend to use
    TI Power Stage Designer ver. 4.

    Using a windings ratio of 1:10 will result in 1kV+ at the rectifier;
    therefore I would run the design in DCM to avoid Qrr ringing.
    A well clamped 1500V ultrafast rectifier could take over.
    Doing so primary magnetizing inductance will be 5uH at Fsw 100kHz,
    results in a 250V FET that needs to handle up to 12Apk and 5.4Arms at low Vin.
    Here Amps^2 of almost 30 needs a solid FET w/ low RdsON around 20milliOhms.
    Due to input voltage variation 1:10 the duty cycle varies in between 6% to 60%.

    This would be my very first starting point for further evaluation, best regards, Bernd
