TRF4140-Q1: FDX and HDX

Part Number: TRF4140-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC27424-Q1, , TMS3705, UCC27424

Hi,

Good Day. I have a customer who has a query related to the E2E Forum Post.

https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless-connectivity/other-wireless-group/other-wireless/f/other-wireless-technologies-forum/580259/hdx-and-fdx-reader/2130403?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=FDX%2520and%2520HDX#2130403

https://e2e.ti.com/support/wireless-connectivity/other-wireless-group/other-wireless/f/other-wireless-technologies-forum/282296/does-tms3705-support-fdx-or-only-hdx/1747982?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=FDX%25252520and%25252520HDX#1747982

Please see below his query for your reference. Thank you very much.

I reviewed the suggested links and from what I read I should use the IC TRF4140-Q1 as it should be able to work with FDX and HDX. Is there any option to increase it power and range? Maybe something like the IC UCC27424-Q1 which was used to increase the power in the driver stage of the antenna in combination with the TMS3705. The tag I'm trying to read is 3cm of diameter and the distance I need to achieve is 50 cm or more.

If the TRF4140 is the suitable, how can I increase it sensitivity for the detection of the signal? Maybe I can use an ARM4 MCU with DSP instruction to do some digital processing at some pin in the TRF4140 IC?

Best Regards,

Ray Vincent

  • Hi Ray Vincent,

if the customer needs both HDX and FDX we have no solution. The FDX support for the TRF4140 was originally planned but later removed from the datasheet.

For the reading distance >50cm the customer needs, a high power reader would be required. Because the TRF4140 main application is automotive which is different to reading a tag at a long distance there is no experience if it can be used with a larger antenna to achieve the read distance the customer needs. Other high power reader are no more available from TI.

  • Hi Helfried,

Good Day. Please see below another query related to your suggestion. Thank you very much.

I'm thinking the best option may be to use the TMS3705 with external driver for the antenna in order to detect HDX signals and another module to detect FDX signals, both coordinated with and MCU.

    1. What option do you suggest in order to increase the sensitivity in the demodulation stage? I was thinking using an ARM MCU with DSP instruction at some pin in the TMS3705, maybe you have a better idea.
    2. What module do you suggest I use for working with FDX protocol?

    Ray Vincent

  • Hi Ray Vincent,

we have no tested solutions for the increase of the sensitivity. The only solution we can provide is for the increase of the TX power with the UCC27424, which I think you already have found:

    https://www.ti.com/lit/an/scba031/scba031.pdf

With a large antenna i.e. 50x50cm it could be that the needed read range can be achieved without adding an amplifier to the RX path. In most cases the range limitation was caused by to less TX power and not by the RX sensitivity.

For FDX I can not give any recommendations because TI is using only HDX for its LF transponders.
