MRD2EVM: Open up the glass transponder tag

Part Number: MRD2EVM

Hi,

I got the MRD2EVM, including some glass transponder tags. I want to explore the circuit structure of the tag specifically to use in other applications. I want to know if there is anything toxic inside if I break it. Also, why is the glass painted black inside except its tip?

Thank you.

  • Hi,

no, there is nothing toxic inside. Some transponders are filled with a silicon oil others are filled with a sort of  elastic casting compound (black in this case). This is necessary for shock protection. The tip is just not completely filled for production reasons.

If you do an internet search you will find pictures that show what is inside. The TI HDX glass transponders contain a ferrite antenna the silicon chip, a load capacitor and a resonance capacitor. No magic at all.

    Best Regards,

    Helfried

  • Thank you for the answer! It's very useful for my project
