TRF7962A: Reader tag error in low temperatures

Part Number: TRF7962A

**note** Customer is using TRF7962RHB, but part number was not available for entry so input TRF7962A

Hi Team,

My customer is using the RFID reader IC fo their product, but they have been facing issues in the field, where the RFID is not being read.

Situations in the field that this issue has occurred in:

  • Around 5% of the time, the RFID tag is not being read
  • It happens in cold seasons
  • Happens often for devices received after March 2022
  • The frequency is increasing yearly (this years winter season has a higher error rate compared to last year)

They have investigated the following about the devices that produce read errors:

  • Happens approx. 1/10 times when receiving from tag, and a CRC error or framing error occurs
  • The correlation between temperature and error frequency is clear, as errors do not occur below 40℃, and the lower the temperature is the higher the probability of this error occurring
  • Error occurs on reader board, where they have some surrounding ICs and pattern coil
  • They checked the receiving signal from the tag (RX_IN1) with the oscilloscope, but there was no big difference between normal operations and when it produced an error
  • They wanted to figure out which devices are causing error by using and icer and lower temperature, and were able to determine that the TRF device and the surrounding crystal oscillator seemed suspicious, but could not specifically diagnose the cause.

Why is it causing this error and how can they determine which ones will cause error?

Best regards,

Mari Tsunoda

    Hi Mari,

1/10 times is from one particular device or from multiple devices? In another word, can you repeat the problem on other reader devices? If you can repeat on multiple devices then is it still true that only 10% of time is observed on each device?

  • Hi Charles,

Let me clarify. This is happening approx. 1/10 times on the same device, but this error is occuring on 5% of all devices. However, since this product is already on market, they need to be able to determine and switch out devices that are causing this error and replace them so your quick support will be needed. Also, is there any way I can switch this forum to internal?

    Best regards,

    Mari Tsunoda

  • Hi Mari,

I have reached out to you in email. We will use email to get to the next step so I will close the thread here. When you open a new thread in the future, you can specify Internal forum rather than moving from external to internal.
