WL1271 WLAN not working with Customized DM385 board with IPNC RDK 3.5 version

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: WL1271, DA8XX, DM385, TPS65910, TSC2004, TLV320AIC3104, BQ32000, TLV320AIC3110, WL1835, AM1808

Hello,

I have been searching for a solution with no resolution for the issue I am having implementing a wl1271 wlan module into my Customized DM385 board with IPNC RDK 3.5 version, kernel v2.6.37, angstom

The WL1271 is connected to the first mmc 1 sdio and I have two gpio  used for wlan enable (gpio3_0) and wlan_irq (gpio3_1). The second mmc is used for the SD card.

I have added the code to my board definition file and built the .ko module files. It appears the modules are loaded properly but I get "ifconfig: SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device" when trying to bring the wlan up.

I added wl1271-fw.bin and wl1271-nvs.bin to thefilsys  lib/firmware/ti-connectivity . I also tried installing them in /firmware/ti-connectivity

I have searched this error for several days and can't seem to identify the problem. SHould I be using wlcore and/or wpa_supplicant? It's not clear which if any are required. Any help would be appreciated.

Here are some guides I have read:

http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/OMAP_Wireless_Connectivity_Hardware_Porting_for_IPNC_DM8148x_Platform

http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/WL127x_Porting_Guide

Below are system responses and my associated files.

  • Hi Mark ,
WL127x is discontinued and is not supported anymore . We are only supporting TI WL18xxMOD on this forum
    ti.com/wilink

    Thanks
    Saurabh
  • Hi Saurabh,

Thanks for your reply. It appears the TI WL18xxMOD supported on kernel 2.6.37.

    I visited this TI81XX_Linux_PSP_Releases

We currently have a product developed on this kernel and would prefer to stay with this version.

    Regards,

    Mark

  • Hi Saurabh,
I have a wl18xxMODCOM8 arriving today and will continue my development.
Can you direct me to the best resource for the drivers and back porting to the 2.6.37 kernel with the DM385?
I have found numerous resources but some have different syntax. I have spent over two weeks working on the WL1271 integration and I am running out of time.
Should I be using the compat drivers?
Should I be using the wpa_supplicant configuration with the wl18xx?

    Thanks for your help!
  • Thanks Saurabh,
I will review the information and continue with my development.

    Best Regards,
    Mark
  • I am almost finished manually applying the patches from this page:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/WL18xx_to_DM3xx_porting_guide

If I am not currently using bluetooth, must I apply the patch associated with the bluetooth?

Below is the reference to the patch:

    # and create gpio driver for bluetooth
    cd ../..
    patch -p1 < wilink8-kernel-patches/0007-add-bluetooth-gpio-enable-to-build-system-and-bth-in.patch

The patch modifies ti_tools/bluetopia/ but I don't currently have a bluetopia directory. Am I required to do this if I am not using bluetooth at this time?

  • Hi Mark,

There is no need to apply that patch (0007). At that time the bluetooth GPIO (BT_EN) was controlled from the Bluetopia stack using a kernel module bt-enable.ko.

That patch was just handling that functionality. It is independent of Wi-Fi operation.

From memory the 0008 patch was Wilink8 specific and so should not be required for WL1271.

    Iain

  • The kernel build I have does not have the compat-wireless directory that is referred to in the patches.
    1. Is the compat-wireless module necessary to get the wl1835 module working? I have been trying to download it from the links on the TI site but it says the page is no longer available. I checked numerous links with the same results.
    2. Are the wlcore modules necessary to get the wl1835 module working? I believe they are but the option to build them doesn't appear in my make menuconfig. (I did add the switch configurations in the defconfig file but the options don't appear in the menu.
Can you provide a source for the files I need?
  • Mark,

The way to build wl127x drivers is via an out of tree build script (build_wl12xx.sh from

The build script will download compat-wireless and use it to build the wl12xx drivers against your kernel (2.6.37) using compat to handle the kernel differences. You need to also modify setup-env to point to your kernel, fs, toolchain etc.

There are some instructions on general wl127x build at

As an aside I have build wl12xx drivers in mainline 4.9 and they appear to work fine.

Not sure why you have started asking about wl1835 modules as you are using wl1271.

    Iain

  • Hi Lain,
Saurabh said the wl1271 was no longer supported on this forum so I integrated the wl1835com instead.
My kernel 2.6.37 had the wl1271 drivers but was not working. It didn't have the compat-wireless module installed.
This is why I am now focused on the wl1835.
I'm trying to get the patches installed and working manually.
Thanks for you help and any additional guidance.
  • Hello,

I am trying to build the wl18xx drivers on my kernel 2.6.37 using wl12xx-build-utilites-master.tar.gz and made it through most of the process. It required some tweaking to get the "git" files to download properly but its moving forward. I am having the below error and have researched the issue with no success. linux/compat_autoconf.h is not in the specified location, not anywhere on the system. Do you have any idea why this isn't building properly?

    make -C /lib/modules/4.4.0-47-generic/build M=/home/msmith/qt/ti-wl18xx/compat-wireless modules

  • Hi Mark,

I can see two problems here:

    1. For wl18xx you should not be using the wl12xx-build-utilites-master.tar.gz - that is a very early set of wl18xx build scripts. You should use the official wl18xx build scripts at git.ti.com/.../master

    2. You have the path /lib/modules/4.4.0-47-generic/build  listed in your command output. That is probably your host PCs kernel modules. In setup-env you need to set KERNEL_PATH to point to the 2.6.37 kernel you are cross compiling for the IPNC.

Use this page as your reference to use the scripts.

I understand you have already applied the various kernel patches to allow wl18xx to build and run.

    Iain

  • Hi Iain,

Thanks for your feedback. I will use the build scripts you provided and rebuild.

Regarding your point #2, I'm not sure why it wasn't using the 2.6.37 settings KLIB_BUILD="/home/msmith/qt/carbb-rdk-dm385/Source/ti_tools/cbb_psp_04_04_00_02/kernel" below:

  • When following the build guide http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/WL18xx_Platform_Integration_Guide  I see see the following errors:

    msmith@msmith-VirtualBox:~/qt/wilink8-wlan-build-utilites$ IP_TABLES=1 verify_kernel_config.sh /home/msmith/qt/carbb-rdk-dm385/Source/ti_tools/cbb_psp_04_04_00_02/kernel/arch/arm/configs/dm385_cbb_ubifs_defconfig

    verify_kernel_config.sh: command not found

    msmith@msmith-VirtualBox:~/qt/wilink8-wlan-build-utilites$ ./verify_kernel_config.sh /home/msmith/qt/carbb-rdk-dm385/Source/ti_tools/cbb_psp_04_04_00_02/kernel/arch/arm/configs/dm385_cbb_ubifs_defconfig

    Validating kernel .config (base_config[@])

    msmith@msmith-VirtualBox:~/qt/wilink8-wlan-build-utilites$

  • Couple of suggestions

1 Assuming verify_kernel_config.sh is in that directory then try adding "./" before calling script ie ./verify_kernel_config.sh
2 I think script operates on the .config in kernel root not the defconfig you have used - can't see why it would be a problem but never know.

  • Thanks lain.

I have tried various combinations to execute the "IP_TABLES=1 verify_kernel_config.sh .config " with no luck. As per the build guide below:

Note: In case there are missing kernel switches like CONFIG_WL12XX_PLATFORM_DATA, then there probably is a missing part in the kernel that relates to the WL127x chipset, and patches should be applied.

    Script usage

    Usage: <option=1> verify_kernel_config.sh <kernel_config_file>

    options:

IP_TABLES - add ip tables support

NO_DEVICE_TREE - add support for non device tree compilation

BT_HCI - add support for BT HCI

For example, for adding the IP_TABLES support use :

    IP_TABLES=1 verify_kernel_config.sh .config

     THe following error is produced:

    msmith@msmith-VirtualBox:~/qt/wilink8-wlan-build-utilites$ IP_TABLES=1 verify_kernel_config.sh /home/msmith/qt/carbb-rdk-dm385/Source/ti_tools/cbb_psp_04_04_00_02/kernel/arch/arm/configs/dm385_cbb_ubifs_defconfig

    verify_kernel_config.sh: command not found

  • I am going to move this to a new thread since I am now integrating the wl18xx
