WL1805MOD: Antenna Routing Information

Part Number: WL1805MOD
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: WL1835MOD, WL1835MODCOM8B

I have some questions that I need answered in order to develop a custom board using the WL1805MOD:

  1. What attachable antenna is recommended?
  2. What should be minimum distance for attachable antenna?
  3. What should be minimum distance of antenna for specific model which Beaglebone Black Wireless is using?
  4. Does the 76mm distance between two antenna only applies for surface mount antenna (stated in the data sheet)?

  • Hi Garrett I hope all is well:

Please find my responses to your questions below:

    1) I believe you are referring to the antenna you can attach to a U.FL connector. Our current certification of the module covers 10 different antenna types, including ones with a cable (both SMA and U.FL ends). You can down load our test reports from www.ti.com/.../wl18xx-CERTIFICATION. Within the test reports you will find the list of antennas that we have certified for.

    2) I believe you are referring to the distance between ANT1 and ANT2? For a MIMO/MRC implementation you want to be at lease 1/2 wavelength apart (usually more if you can) as well as ensure that the antenna are oriented 90 to 180 apart from each other. In the end this comes done to a performance criteria and limitations n your board.

    3) Since BBB is not designed from TI. I cannot speak to it. If you want to refer to a TI solution you can look at the WL1835MODCOM8B. The WL1835MOD on this board is the superset of the WL1805MOD.

    4) The 76mm is equivalent to the half wavelength distance as stated in 2 above.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Riz
