Configuring BeagleBone White and OpenGL

I've been having issues getting the PowerVR driver working with the latest 06.00.00.00 SDK on a Beaglebone white. Here is break down of the steps I've taken so far:

Compiling TI EZSDK 06.00.00.00 for BeagleBone White with LCD7 Cape
1. Install Sitara SDK (ti-sdk-am335x-evm-06.00.00.00-Linux-x86-Install)
2. Clone sitara-board-linux git tree
    • git clone git://gitorious.org/sitara-board-port/sitara-board-port-linux.git
3. Pull template, MMC/SD support, Ethernet, and LCD support tags
    • git checkout 06.00.00.00-template
    • git checkout 06.00.00.00-mmc
    • git checkout 06.00.00.00-ethernet
    • git checkout 06.00.00.00-touchscreen
4. Configure make
    • make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=/home/sitara/ti-sdk-am335x-evm-06.00.00.00/linux-devkit/sysroots/i686-arago-linux/usr/bin/arm-linux-gnueabihf-     tisdk_am335x-evm_defconfig
5. Build Kernel
    • make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=/home/sitara/ti-sdk-am335x-evm-06.00.00.00/linux-devkit/sysroots/i686-arago-linux/usr/bin/arm-linux-gnueabihf- uImage
6. Build Modules
    • make ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=/home/sitara/ti-sdk-am335x-evm-06.00.00.00/linux-devkit/sysroots/i686-arago-linux/usr/bin/arm-linux-gnueabihf- modules
7. Install Modules
    • sudo make ARCH=arm INSTALL_MOD_PATH=/home/sitara/ti-sdk-am335x-evm-06.00.00.00/targetNFS modules_install
8. Install Graphics SDK
    • /home/sitara/ti-sdk-am335x-evm-06.00.00.00/Graphics_SDK_setuplinux_4_09_00_01_hardfp_minimal_demos.bin
    • Install es8.x drivers to /home/sitara/Graphics_SDK_4_09_00_01
9. Modify Rules.make file to call out file locations per below:
    • HOME=/home/sitara/
    • CSTOOL_DIR=/home/sitara/ti-sdk-am335x-evm-06.00.00.00/linux-devkit/sysroots/i686-arago-linux/usr/
    • CSTOOL_PREFIX=arm-linux-gnueabihf-
    • KERNEL_INSTALL_DIR=/home/sitara/board-port/sitara-board-port-linux
    • TARGETFS_INSTALL_DIR=/home/sitara/ti-sdk-am335x-evm-06.00.00.00/targetNFS
    • GRAPHICS_INSTALL_DIR=/home/sitara/Graphics_SDK_4_09_00_01
10. Set source environment
    • export ARCH=arm
11. Build graphics SDK
    • make BUILD=release OMAPES=8.x all
12. Install graphics SDK
    • make BUILD=release OMAPES=8.x all install
13. Rebuild Kernel, Modules, and install modules (Steps 5,6,7)
14. Copy built uImage to /home/sitara/image
    • cp /home/sitara/board-port/sitara-board-port-linux/arch/arm/boot/uImage /home/sitara/image/uImage-board-port
15. Copy MLO and u-boot from prebuilt folder
    • cp /home/sitara/ti-sdk-am335x-evm-06.00.00.00/board-support/prebuilt-images/MLO-am335x-evm /home/sitara/image/MLO-board-port
    • cp /home/sitara/ti-sdk-am335x-evm-06.00.00.00/board-support/prebuilt-images/u-boot-am335x-evm.img /home/sitara/image/u-boot-board-port
16. Create SD card using create_sdcard script in SDK installation dir

    I suggest you should check below point based on the logs you have provided -

    Can you please check if the changes shown in below patch are already present in the kernel sources you are using - http://gitorious.org/rowboat/kernel/commit/d3ab5e87304b45dc594351ed091a6ae451f40de7?format=patch

    If the kernel source does not have the above changes, then you can build without using PM_RUNTIME command line option ie same way as you are building now. But if the kernel source already has the above changes present in the patch, then you should be building graphics SDK with PM_RUNTIME=1 command line option. Again, please note that building graphics SDK with PM_RUNTIME=1 command line option is required only if the changes that are part of above patch is already present in the kernel sources you are using. Otherwise you need not use PM_RUNTIME.

  • Thanks so much for the reply Prathap! The kernel source I'm using does NOT contain the HWMOD patch. I have, however, tried compiling and testing the SGX driver with and without the PM_RUNTIME option at compilation. I get the "/usr/local/bin/pvrsrvctl: SrvInit failed (already initialized?)   • Hi Pat,

    Have you double checked/confirmed that the kernel source does not have sgx hwmod patch? 

    If  the kernel does not contain the HWMOD patch, you need not build with PM_RUNTIME option. 

    Please follow these steps (assuming the kernel sources do not have any sgx hwmod patch/changes) & you should get it working -

    1.Clean & Build graphics SDK as -

    make clean

    make BUILD=release OMAPES=8.x all_km.

    2.Install - sudo make BUILD=release OMAPES=8.x install.

    3.Make sure that by default ie as part of bootup rc scripts no graphics drivers are inserted & pvrsrvctl is not run by default during bootup. When the board boots up, issue lsmod to confirm that there are no sgx driver modules already inserted.

    4.Now run /etc/init.d/335x-demo.

    If this works, you can then make changes to run 335x-demo by default as part of your bootup scripts.

    If you are still facing an issue, you can apply the kernel source HWMOD patch & now try building graphics SDK with PM_RUNTIME=1.

    I removed all SGX driver insertions at startup and rebuilt the SGX modules (after make clean) with and without the PM_RUNTIME=1. I looked over the other forum post you noted in the last message and I see some differences in what Dima was seeing. 

    After boot, I ran the /etc/init.d/335x-demo and I get this with and and without the PM_RUNTIME=1.

    Installation complete!
    You may now reboot your target.

  • I've got the SGX drivers loaded and they are working now. I believe the issue was that when I checked out the touchscreen branch from the repo I was using I blew away some important init routines.Thanks again Prathrap.

    I believe I pulled the GIT repo at https://gitorious.org/rowboat/kernel/ and compiled the kernel from that source. It included support for the 7" LCD cape. So essentially I replaced steps 2 & 3 with:

    git clone git://gitorious.org/rowboat/kernel.git

    All the other steps should be the same.
