first use of ARM Processor

Hi All,

I am Firmware Engineer, my experience with all my past projects was with Microcontrollers, developing code using C language based on examples from the relevant MCU family and its IDE.

mostly We have to do a project using the ARM A10 cortex, I ask for some suggestions for how to start for RT/Embedded programmer that is not familiar/experienced with Linux/debian/android...

Actually I have to start learning how to deal and to develop our application, How to start?

Hi Feras,

Check the Sitara AM335x Portal wiki page: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Sitara_AM335x_Portal

You can start with the StarterWare development package which provides no-OS (MCU-like) platform support for ARM TI processors.

There is also the Sitara Linux SDK if you wish to have an OS for your application. Links can be found on the Sitara AM335x Portal page I mentioned above.

actually this is the point now!

I used to work on MCUs, I did not work with OS yet.

how can I decide what to choose? can both of them make the same things (StarterWare & Linux)?

which factors I have to consider?

and let's say that I start with StarterWare, and after that I develop specific application code I see that I need the OS, can I take my developed code and put it in linux in easy way?

I guess it depends on how big your project/application is. You can check what the StarterWare package supports here:

Depending on whether you choose to use Linux SDK version 06.00.00.00 (based on kernel 3.2) or version 07.00.00.00 (based on kernel 3.12), check the drivers user guides:

Porting the StarterWare code to Linux wouldn't be exactly easy, because the driver APIs are different.

I'me reading about "debugging"! they mentioned just CCS!

can we also use the IAR for debugging?

Yes, CCS is a TI tool and there are many user guides in our wiki that may help you with using it. There is also a dedicated CCS forum here: http://e2e.ti.com/support/development_tools/code_composer_studio/f/81.aspx

Unfortunately I'm not able to help you with IAR.
