Dissipation of C64x+

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C6474

hi all,

I have a question about how the value 2 watt per core is found for C64x+ dissipation. compared to what is measered? so what is the conditions of measurement of this value?

Thanks for more  details.

  • It looks like you picked just about every multi-core tag you could find, so I do not know which DSP chip you are using. And I do not know what you are quoting for "2 Watts per core".

Your first tag is for the C6472. For more details, please start with the TMS320C6472 Power Consumption Summary which includes a link to a spreadsheet you can use to estimate power for your specific use case(s). The Summary document includes power estimates for a low activity case and for a high activity case.

  • Hi,

Thank you first for your answer, I use TMS320C6474, I found that the thermic dessipation for the three  cores is about 6 watt, so for one core is about 2 watt. you can check it if it's not  correct.   I use it  for Dhrystone/ thermic Dissipation ( DMIPS/W).  my question is in general what are the conditions to get thermic dissipation for TMS320C6474 or for one core? we were found that de DMIPS/w for TMS320c6474 is good compared with others architectures. but this question is posed.

    Thank you RandyP

  • Did you find the similar Power Consumption Summary document for the C6474? This will explain the conditions for predicting power dissipation.

I assume you actually measured the current into the various power grids of the device to get your result, is that correct? Or did you run the test and measure the temperature of the device?

What DMIPS value did you determine? What DMIPS/W did you determine?

Generally, the C64x+ runs cooler for control code, which is what the Dhrystone test will execute. This is because control code tends to use a lower average number of processing elements when compared to DSP code. DSP code is more readily optimized to multiple processing elements (parallel instructions).

Please let us know if the C6474 Power Consumption Summary document does not answer your question. And if it does, please mark this post by clicking Verify Answer.
