SD card fat files maximum number

Hi ,

I have a question about the fat file system , I am creating files on SDcard , but i found that after 170 files are created , the fopen always return NULL. so I can't create more than 170 files ????

if so , what can i do to overcome this problem ?

I'm using tirtos_tivac_2_12_01_33 , ccs 6.1 , ti-cgt-arm_5.2.4, on tivac129 target.

Hi Mostafa,

There are no such limits that I can find in the documentation. Can you please check if you have sufficient disk space to create a new file on the SD card after creating 170 files? FatFs has an API f_getfree() that can provide you the free memory information (you can check the TI-RTOS fatsd raw example for this API usage).

Hi Vikram,

I'm sure about the free space. The total size of 170 files is about 5 MB , and I'm using 2 GB SD card.

Hi Mostafa,

I am wondering if you have a long file name. I tried the TI-RTOS fatsd examples and modified it to create 200 files. I was able to create them successfully if the filename length was shorter than 13 characters. Looks like there is a limit of 13 characters for file names in FATFS (including the '\0' character).

Can you check if the file names are within 13 characters?

Thanks for your reply. I'm using long file names , I rebuilt the bios in the tirtos to have LFN. Is that the reason ???

Yes, that would be the reason if you are using the default BIOS library (which has FATFS short file name support). But if you have rebuilt BIOS library to have LFN and re-linked it with your application, it should allow upto 255 characters (from FatFS appnote).
