TPD6S300: TYPE C USB only used for power supply

In our design we have 2 USB TYpe C ports one is for Communication & power and the other is used for supplementary power (no communication)

1. For the Communication & Power port we intend to use the TI TPD6S300 for the protection circuit.

a) Do we also need a PulseGuard ESD Suppressors - PGB1010603 VBUS lines as well like we have in other USB 2.0 designs or is this covered by the TI TPD6S300 ?

b) We are not using Alternate mode so I am assuming that the SBU1\2 pins on the Type C connected should be left unconnected ? What about the associated pins on the TPD6S300 (C_SBU1\1 & SBU1\2) also they should be left unconnected ? 

2. For the supplementary power port, the signals we will be connecting to are the VBUS and the C1\C2 lines. What type of protection would you suggest ? The TI TPD6S300 ? Is this  a little over kill since we will not be using the SSTX \ SSRX nor the DP \DN lines ? Would a  PulseGuard ESD Suppressors - PGB1010603 on the VBUS lines be sufficient - what the CC lines ?

    I'm happy to help answer your questions.

    1. a) The TPD6S300 provides ESD protection Diodes for the D+/D- lines, so no further ESD supression should be necessary as long as these connections are made and follow the layout recommendations in the datasheet.
    1. b) If you are not using alternate modes, then I suggest you ground the SBU1/2 connections on both sides of the switch. The device will work with them floating, but I always prefer to have all non-used connections at a known potential.

    2. This is a somewhat difficult question to answer. The TPD6S300 is intended to be used to protect the lower voltage type-C controller ports from IEC ESD events and from shorts to VBUS. If your system does not require short to VBUS protection, thena TVS style ESD device would be sufficient for the CC Lines and appropriate power supply ESD protection for the VBUS line.

    1.b) Is it correct to assume that since I am not using the SBU1/2 signals that I should leave them disconnected ?

    2. Do you have any type of device that can give the appropriate protection just for the CC lines ? For applications using only TUSB320LA  - like our power port, this could very much come in handy ?! 

    3. If I do use the  TPD6S300 I assume that it would be best to GND D1\D2 pins as well ?

    Look below for  my comments/feedback in red:

    I recommend to tie both those pins (SBU1/2 and C_SBU1/2) to ground. It's best to ground these pins to a known potential.

    If you're planning on only using the CC lines, then I would recommend using the TPD2s300 protection device. The TPD2s300 only protects the CC lines, whereas the TPD6s300 protects the CC, SBU, and D+/- lines.

    At the Type-C connector, I believe the high-speed signals can be left unconnected. The other signals (CCx, SBUx) depend on the application. Please refer to the USB Specs which can be found here: http://www.usb.org/developers/docs/ . 

    2. What type of protection do you recommend for the VBUS power lines from the Type C connector?

    The TPD2/6/8s300 family of devices protect CC and SBU pins (neighboring channels) from a short-to-VBUS. Look at my previous comment to determine the features of all three devices.
