Hi TI

A client has asked us can we design a USB hub for a USB 2 device that could be connected to a USB 3 host. Their product includes some USB 2 devices, and their intent is to allow a USB 3 host connection for physical compatibility with later equipment although continuing with USB 2 electrically.

If the TUSB8020 is connected to a USB 3 host but connected to USB 2 devices downstream, does it signal USB 2 to the upstream host?

Yes,
If you connect the TUSB8020B to a USB 3.0 Host, they both will be able to work with USB2.0 and USB1.1 devices. USB is backwards compatible so there will be no issue at all.

Hi Ron,

Please note that a USB 3.0 Hub connects to a USB 3.0 host over both the USB 3.0 superspeed signals and the USB 2.0 signals. It is essentially two hubs in one package and it does not translate between USB 2.0 speed and USB 3.0 speed, the buses are separate.

I understand this. Can I assume that even though the PC will discover the USB3 port in the hub, there will be no USB3 devices present, and so it will subsequently search and find the two USB2 devices?

Yes, the PC will check and find both USB3 and USB2 devices behind the hub every time.
