Connection of the I/O modules to PC over fiber communication

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ONET4201PA, ONET4201LDHi, It is necessary to establish communication between I/O modules and one or several PCs. The project requires application of the fiber communication, because network length between I/O modules may reach 2 km. Additionally, there are already installed fiber cables in this particular facility. It is desirable to enable control of the I/O modules from several PCs simultaneously. Summarizing all requirements, I suppose that implementation of the Ethernet is required. Am I right? I have not used Ethernet and fiber technologies before. What would be the best topology and components to create this network? If Ethernet is a right choice, how are optical signals converted to electrical and vice versa? May fiber optic ethernet switch be used for this pupose? Will our system influence other systems, which are connected to the same fiber network? It is planned to use a TMS570 device with Ethernet port in each I/O module. What is your advice? Best regards, Dmitrij
  • Dmitrij,

This forum is for questions regarding the TI portfolio of optical networking ICs. I suggust you review some products such as the ONET4201LD and ONET4201PA and research optical transcceivers from companies such as JDSU and Avago. THe transceiver does the E-O and O-E conversion and it interfaces with an ASIC, FPGA or SERDES. Our ICs are typically used in optical transceivers such as SFP and SFP+.

    Alex.
