DS92LV18 & TUSB1210 : extending USB 2.0 over 1000ft

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS92LV18, TUSB1210, TUSB3410

Background: I am trying to extend USB 2.0 function over 1000ft using TI's TUSB1210 and DS92LV18.

Can the DS92LV18 accept USB 2.0, are there any potential problems with this configuration?

Is the DS92LV18 the best part for this application?

Thanks,

Jay

  • Hi Jay,
USB is not designed to work at great distances. The LV18 is not designed to receive USB signals. The highest speed range for USB 2.0 is 480Mbps - the losses at this speed are far too large to work over extreme distances. For lower speeds, interface devices standards like RS-485 can achieve long distance communication over slower speeds. See the example RS-485 device DS3695 for additional information.

  • Lee,

Thanks for your help with this.
My understanding is that USB doesn't have the redundancy built in to transmit over long distances.

What other parts along with the DS3695 would be in the solution?
TUSB3410? has Automatic RS-485 bus transceiver control.

The customer is in early stages of development and open to suggestions. We can have a lot of influence in their design if we can help them.
