THVD1500: ESD Protection Issue

Part Number: THVD1500

Hi  Experts:

I have one question for the ESD protection on the THVD1500 ,  as the description of the spec in the datasheet , the value of the Vesd is the voltage with respect to the ground (common mode ) , with this spec, perhaps we don't need to add the external TVS diode between A,B terminal and ground.

However, I don't know the ESD strength value between A,B terminals so that i can't judge if need to add the TVS diode between the A,B terminal.

  • Jason,
When an ESD event happens, the build up charge needs to be dissipated. It usually finds the most conductive path to go to the ground. Therefore external TVS diode could be added between A/B and ground to help discharge the current. Usually the impedance between A and B is not low (comparing to A/B to ground), which is less concerned during ESD events. Please let me know if you have other questions.

  • Hi Hao L:

Thanks for your reply , customer is considering if add the TVS diode between the A/B , if the impedance between A/B to ground is lower than between A/B , is it possible for some of the ESD energy go through the A/B as well ? If not , i think it is not essential for them to add TVS between the A/B.
  • Jason,
I would say very small amount of energy would go through A to B. I agree it's not essential to add TVS between A/B.
