TPS65982-EVM: TPS65982 support for Thunderbolt

Part Number: TPS65982-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982

Hello,

I want to interface TPS65982 to thunderbolt interface. So, I have checked with 2 TPS65982 EVM, one in DRP mode (Config ID 5)  and another in UFP mode (Config ID 10). I am using thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable from startech to connect both the EVMs.

Thunderbolt cable : TBLT3MM2M

Link: https://www.startech.com/Cables/thunderbolt-3-cables/thunderbolt-3-20gbps-usb-c-cable~TBLT3MM2M

But, as per the EVM userguide LED D5 should toggle/blink. Only D9 is blinking since VBUS is negotiated for 20V. Even I read the Intel VID status from the TPS6598x Utilities GUI and found that

Intel VID active : False.

Can you please let me know what other configuration to be done to negotiate to thunderbolt mode?

Hariprasad Bhat

  • Hi, Hariprasad

Besides ID5 (TBT dock-DRP) and ID10 (TBT device-UFP), you can use ID2 (TBT NB-DRP) and ID8 (TBT desktop DFP). This information can be found on table 2, pg13 of the 82 EVM user manual.

Your cable and config should work, I will look into why your ID5 and ID10 config is not going into TBT mode and reply asap.

    Thanks

  • Hi Jeff,

    Thanks for your suggestion.

Even with ID2 (TBT NB-DRP) and ID8 (TBT desktop DFP) combination both EVMs will not negotiate to TBT. But, if I connect an EVM with config ID2 (DRP)  to a thunderbolt port of a laptop, then I am seeing that EVM is configured for thunderbolt.

I checked the register as well and Intel VID active is true. Also, D5 LED is blinking in the EVM.

But  it is failing in below scenarios

    1)EVM(DFP/DRP) to EVM(DRP/UFP) connection

    2) EVM(DRP/DFP)/Thunderbolt system to EVM (UFP) configuration.

  • Hi Hariprasad,

Sorry for the late reply, I will try to recreate this issue and get back to you asap.

    Thanks
  • Hi Hariprasad,

Sorry again for the very late reply. I managed to recreate your issue with a different TBT cable and am now searching for a solution.
    1) Are you still using the unchanged base recovery FW found in 'Device' < 'Re-flash EVM Firmware (recovery)' < 'EVM recovery file: tps65982_evm_flash_image.bin'?
    2) Can you send me a PD log of the DFP on a plug event during issue?

    Thanks
  • Hi Jeff,

As I mentioned previously, PD got negotiated to thunderbolt with EVM config ID2 (DRP) to thunderbolt port of a laptop. So, I ended my testing with that approach for time being.

  • Hi Hariprasad,

For failing case #1 are you using configID 8 and configID 2?

    Thanks
  • Hi Jeff,

Case-1 failure : (Config ID 5)  and (Config ID 10)

Case-1 failure : (Config ID 2)  and (Config ID 8)

These cases were observed between 2 EVMs with tps65982_evm_flash_image.bin in both the boards

  • Hi Hariprasad,

Can you confirm you are loading the latest version of App Config onto your EVMs? To do this, please use the TPS6598x Application Customization Tool and click "Device" --> "Re-Flash EVM Firmware (Recovery)". Select your USB to SPI adapter (either FTDI or Aardvark) and then select the TPS65982 EVM Image. Please let me know if the issue persists with the latest FW version.

    Thank you,
    Eric
