USB Type-C PD controller question

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65983B

Hi,

I am working on a project that requires an USB Type C PD controller. We have LI-ion battery that has power and SMBus interface (to read the battery info).

We are looking for a type-C USB PD controller system which can:

1) source/sink the power from/to the battery which is connected to a device on USB type C port

2) charge the battery from an AC/DC power adapter and

3) read the battery status from SMBus and pass it to USB type C port.

Does TI have any solution or a product like this? Is there any dev Kit for USB type C PD controller that we can use or any reference design.

This is a somewhat a block diagram of what I am looking for:

Thank You.

  • Hi Deepak,

for point 3, this is a new feature that was implemented with USB PD 3.0 spec. Our current release PD 3.0 device is the TPS65983B. However, we have some more PD 3.0 devices set to release in Q2.

Battery Status Messaging is discussed in section 6.4.5 of the PD 3.0 Spec:

The TPS65983B also contains BC1.2 to be able to charge batteries. It can also Source & Sink power through the Type-C port.

    Thank you,

    Eric
