TIDM-TMS570BMS: Active Balancing Current (Hardware Modification)

Part Number: TIDM-TMS570BMS

Hi Guys,

I'm using EM1402EVM together with LAUNCHXL-TMS57004 to perform active balancing. I'm able to balance current (charge and discharge) at 5A.

I want to balance the cell at current 10A or more for battery 16s cell in series(total cells voltage = 60V).

Based on the EMB1499Q datasheet, the balancing current can be set as below:

Ibalancing = Vsense_hs / Rsense

Set Vset = 2.2V

Vsense_hs = Vset / 40 = 0.055V

Let say, I want to set Ibalancing = 10A

So I change the Rsense = 0.055 / 10 = 5.5mohm to achieve 10A balancing current right. Beside changing Rsense, what else components need to modify?

Thanks,

Regards,

XH Low

  • Hi Xiang,

    The EM1402 EVM can be used only for cell balancing currents up to +/- 5 A. Please refer to the "Application Hints" section of the EMB1499Q datasheet (pages 14 to 17) to see an explanation of how each of the external components are selected based on balancing current, VSET and Vsense. This is the same datasheet section as the one you shared above and in pages 15 to 17 mentions how the other components are selected. You would also need to review any component in the board that is in the charge/discharge high current path (such as the switches) to ensure that they can handle the high current.

    The components selected for EM1402 EVM were selected taking into account a maximum current of 5A.

  • Thanks Leslie.
    Meaning there is no restriction on the balance current limit. As long as I design the hardware that can sustain such high current. (Eg. parts with higher current rating, high power PCB layout, heat dissipation management etc).

    In this case, I will build a new board and not using EM1402EVM board.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Xiang,

    From our device point of view (EMB1499), make sure you are not violating the specification limits for VSENSE_HS and VSENSE_LS when selecting your components. The voltage observed on these pins will depend on your components selection. I recommend that you build a prototype first to test your solution before fabricating several PCBs.
