Using On-board USB Hub to program MCU

Hello everyone,

I am working on a project that will be using an MSP430 to monitor temperature and send the data via XBee. Can I use the On-board USB Hub from an MSP430F5529 launch pad to program the MCU on my board? For example, removing the shunts on the launch pad and using jumpers to the program pins on my board.

Or, can I use the USB pins on the MCU on my board to program the device? Any advise you have to offer would be greatly appreciated!

Anson,

Which MCU are you trying to program? Is it a msp4305x device? If so should be ok.

You can disconnect the jtag signal and boom then up to your board. Make sure you bring the ground over, and don't forget to power the board.

Thank you Jason for your reply! I was planning on using the MSP430F122 but I think I'll switch to an MSP430F5X since it's cheaper and has more available pins. Do you have any recommendations? The primary feature I need is a UART port and one or two DIOs.

TI's website has a parametric search.

As for programming your own MCU: if it has USB, it can always be programmed with its built-in bootstrap loader (BSL).
You can also use the "eZ-FET lite" on the Launchpad to program and debug; see sections 2.2.2 and 2.2.9 of the LaunchPad's User's Guide.

Thank you Clemens for your response! I did see that the MSP430F5131 does have the capability to be programmed through the BSL. I've never programmed an MCU using that method before but I'll look into it.
