MSP-FET430UIF Firmware problem

I am currently trying to use a MSP-FET430UIF device but I cant get any of the coding programs (i.e. CCS or IAR) to recognize my device. I have a second newer MSP-FET that works perfectly so i don't believe it is a driver issue but instead a firmware one. The MSP-FET wont even turn on any lights when plugged in but you can get a green power light when trying to update the software using Elprotronic. The device manager still shows the correct driver as MSP-FET430UIF-CDC but when I try reading the firmware version using Elprotronic I am getting 0 as the version. When I try to force an update using the software the software will freeze after erasing firmware step. Is there anyway to reinstall the firmware onto the MSP-FET to get it working again or it is lost for good?

Hi Brian,

To confirm, the MSP-FET430UIF (gray box) is having trouble, but the MSP-FET (smaller black box) is working correctly, correct? Everything below will only work for trying to fix the MSP-FET430UIF and NOT the MSP-FET.

You can try downgrading the firmware to the older V2 firmware using the CCS Downgrade tool. The tool is V3V2.bat, and is located in (CCS_ROOT)\ccs_base\DebugServer\drivers. Just make sure you don't have any other FET Tools connected to the PC at the same time (old or new style. After the downgrade is complete, try downloading firmware to the MSP430 in CCS as normal, and let it re-update the FET. If this procedure doesn't work, your MSP-FET430UIF is likely lost for good.

Yep you are correct. The MSP-FET works perfectly but the MSP-FET430UIF is no longer communicating with the computer. I tried the V3V2.bat but it keeps failing halfway through and CCS wont even reconize it is a FET to try to install the new update. Thank you for trying!

Hi Brian,

If the V3V2.bat script won't recognize the FET430UIF, then unfortunately, I think it is toast. I'm glad you already have an MSP-FET as that is what I would recommend replacing it with.

Is there something that can be replaced inside of it to make it work again for example replacing either the M430F1612 or the TUSB3410? Then reinstalling the firmware?

Unfortunately, probably not. The only way to replace that firmware is through the upgrade/downgrade tools or with the updater included in the development environment (CCS/IAR, Elprotronics Fet Pro430, or similar). The problem is that there is no way to recover a non-responding device.

My boss is asking that we downgrade the MSPFET to version 2 so that it will be compatible with IAR V5.2 which is what he currently has on his computer. Is there any way to do this without the chance of bricking another device? I believe I used CCS to upgrade it but am not 100 percent sure on that. Will using the IAR Kickstart Upgrade tool work?

Brain,

You cannot downgrade the MSP-FET to v2. You can only downgrade the MSP-FET430UIF. To use MSP-FET with IAR, you will need to upgrade IAR to a newer version that supports the MSP-FET.
