Reset is not stable, MCU is not power up normally

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430G2553

Dear everyone,

I have problem with my design (MSP430G2553 chip), after powering, sometimes the MCU worked, sometimes it's not. Sometimes,  when I use my hand touch to the SWD pins it worked as well.

Below is my design, please take a look and give me the solution to make it stable as G2 LaunchPad. I use 0805 smd size for both resistor and capacitor 47k and 1nF , respectively.

  • Are you powering from a usb port on a computer?.
USB only allows 10uF cap, anything larger and it's short circuit protection may kick in.
Soft start LDO's is also helpful to avoid this if you want a larger cap behind the LDO.

And as there is no enumeration involved you may be limited to 100mA and not 500mA

  • Yes, I am.

When I change to use in a 5V adapter, It was more stabe.

So my question is, If I change to use 10uF, will I solve my problem ? is 10uF cap better than 220uF for this LDO IC (in my mind, larger value of cap will better).

And as there is no enumeration involved you may be limited to 100mA and not 500mA. --> How I can do this?
    Thank you!

  • So my question is, If I change to use 10uF, will I solve my problem ?

Since only you have the hardware, you need to find out yourself - by changing the caps.

...is 10uF cap better than 220uF for this LDO IC (in my mind, larger value of cap will better).

Try connecting a discharged cap to 5V, and measure it's (peak) charge current. It is only limited by the internal parasitic resistance (and inductance), and will probably be in the range of a few ampere.

How I can do this ?

Most probably, you need far less than 100mA.

  • yes.For long, we have had occasional problem with MSP series, with its RESET pin. Also noise immunity is very low.For example, if one operates a contactor through a relay driven by an MSP430 device, invariably the device resets or malfunctions needing a watch dog timer. Some times Watch dog timer also does not reset, because unfortunately,RESET is not an ABSOLUTE NMI.iT IS GATED BY SOFTWARE .THIS IS A VERY DIFFICULT SITUATION ,BECAUSE THIS FACT IS NOT VISIBLE IN THE DATA SHEET.SO ONE EXPECTS A RESET TO BEAN ABSOLUTE NMI.I have been using TEXAS FOR THE PAST TWELVE YEARS AND AND LOST MANY ORDERS BECASUE OF msp430 occasional malfunbction. But as no Texas employee is made directly responsible the specific question, this query freewheels itself and finally after about nineyears of struggle, we were told to pull down,SBW pin with a 10k resistance, which improved the immunity and WATCH DOG TIMER RESET WAS FUNCTIONING ,BUT STILL WHEN A CONTACTOR OPERATES MSP RESETS, WHERE AS OTHER PROCESSORS LIKE MICRO CHIP OR HYCONTEK DO NOT RESET.Changing theprocessor is not an easy option.
wILL ANYBODY FROM TEXAS TAKE UP THIS ISSUE OF RELIABLE OPERATION, NOISE IMMUNITY etc IS ADEQUATELY ADDRESSED , GETTING PROPER FEED BACK,AND PUT THE DATA ON THE DATA SHEETS..
Users like us, have spent lots of time and money in building up a vast software library to be reused.
I HOPE TI UNDERSTANDS AND ACTS,NOT TO JUST LEAVE THE PROBLEMS TO THE FORUM EMERGED SOLUTION, BUT A REAL TIME EVALUATION AT THE LABS OF TI TO BRING ABOUT A COMPREHENSIVE DOCUMENTED SOLUTION WITHOUT CLAUSES AND SUBCLAUSES..
AT THE COST OF REPEATING LET ME SAY THAT OTHER DEVICES LIKE MICRO CHIP, TERIDIAN(MAXIM),Hycontek(A taiwanese chip,) DO NOT GET RESET OR MALFUNCTION WITH SIMILAR HARDWARE LEADING TO SWITCH A CONTACTOR OR ANY SUCH INDUCTION LOAD ON THE SAME SUPPLY LINE.
Also can we get an answer into century.metering@gmail.com
  • Your post is almost unreadable, and tells of an unsorted mind.

For example, if one operates a contactor through a relay driven by an MSP430 device, invariably the device resets or malfunctions needing a watch dog timer. ... I have been using TEXAS FOR THE PAST TWELVE YEARS AND AND LOST MANY ORDERS BECASUE OF msp430 occasional malfunbction.

Do not mistake inadequate hardware design and omitted EMI protection measures for component failure.

    And do not hijack threads.

  • >I HOPE TI UNDERSTANDS AND ACTS
Sure they do. Thou you shall not contact TI through forum, but request TI FAE support through your supplier instead.
  • I do not understand this reply.

    Are you from TI.

AGAIN, INADEQUATE HARDWARE DESIGN, to put it mildly is a unfair criticism, and NOT AN ANSWER, ESPECIALLY IN THE BACKDROP OF :

I have clearly mentioned that the same hardware design with other processors DO NOT POSE PROBLEM.

I have also mentioned that after it was told that BSW pin needs to be pulled down, the performance improved.

Also a contactor obviously is switched on through a relay which is driven by MSP430 PIN through a transistor.
    .
THERE IS A LARGE GALVANIC ISOLATION between MSP PIN AND THE CONTACTOR POWER.

May I ask for a detailed discussion on the specific topic of RESET not BEING NMI, in the earlier versions, and is it going to be a real NMI in the subsequent versions, and also is there any specification or any other details that talks about the ability of the micro controller to function in a noisy environment.
I do recall talking to some TI person on this topic.

I am designing a new series of products and I am considering all aspects before embarking on this effort.

I am looking for answers ,because I am already in quandary ,as to which other micro should I go, in case I need to switch and the resultant problem.

The last thing I need is another question with out an answer.

I wrote this mail after speaking to one of the authorised distributor, who after listening the issue, in the backdrop of my new project requirement, gave me the link.

I request some responsible TI people who identify themselves, to give me an answer.

    Regards

  • An E2E forum is for communication and exchange between CUSTOMERS, and not a TI support hotline. Ti staff -might- be present. As others stated, get to TI directly, e.g. via FAE.

    And don't hijack threads.

  • Shouting in UPPERCASE and flooding will not help you get attention you are looking for. At least not mine. Yes, im done here in this thread
  • While I do not know who you are, I DO NOT NEED YOUR ADVICE or as you are imagining your attention.Obviously you are not reading the technical aspects of an issue, before letting your wisdom to flow in here.
Then it is a free country and I did not know about this forum, which looks like comments coming in the electronic media
    .
  • >I DO NOT NEED YOUR ADVICE
Fine. Live with your truth happily ever after this thread.

    >Obviously you are not reading the technical aspects of an issue
Indeed - because you fail to provide them in convenient to read, way. So I don't even try.
