TPS65951: TPS65951 USB section sample schematic

Part Number: TPS65951
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24157, DM3730, TPS65950

Dear experts,

I was wondering if I can acquire any reference schematic/circuit depicting the USB section of the TPS65951. My customer would like to make sure they are doing the design correctly.

Thanks,

Murat Ilhan.

TI-Turkiye.

  • Hi, in the specification we have sections with the recommended schematics and a table 13.1 of recommended componends for each section. Thanks Tuan
  • Thanks Tuan. Yes, that should be enough.
    Best regards,
    Murat.
  • Hi Tuan,

Just got feedback from my customer. They have the following questions:

"The diagram above represents our system. We use TPS65951 and BQ24157.

    Q1)

VPROG : According to datasheet, EEPROM programming voltage input.

There is neither any other explanation regarding EEPROM's

functionality in charging, nor what must be connected there(What is voltage level "VPP"?)

    Q2)

VPRECH :According to datasheet, Precharge regulator output.

As far as We can understand from the datasheet, we should use this rail

for referenced signals; such as "CHRG_DET_N,USBCHG_ENZ,USBCHRG_STATZ".

We are going to connect those signals "CHRG_DET_N,USBCHG_ENZ,USBCHRG_STATZ"

    to BQ24157's corresponding pins.

Howewer, according to BQ24157's datasheet those pins must be pulled up to an 1.8V rail which is not our case.

Also,TPS65951 can provide 1 mA from this rail which is obviously not enough for I2c pull-ups.

How shall we overcome this issue? If we are going to use another rail which is 1.8V, isn't

that going to be a problem that CHRG_DET_N,USBCHG_ENZ,USBCHRG_STATZ signals are referenced to VPRECH(1.5v)?

    Q3)

MANU_BRIX: MANU_BRIX pin is used for battery removal detection and generates an interrupt upon battery removal.

Should we connect that signal to the processor(DM3730)? Is any pull-up or pull-down resistor required?

    Q4)

DP,DN,ID: These are USB OTG signals. Do we need any external pull-up or pull-down resistors on those signals?

    Q5)

ADCIN0,ADCIN1: According to datasheet ADCIN0: Battery Detection and ADCIN1: BCI only, Battery temperature.

Where shall we connect those? I couldn't find any reference. Can you provide reference schematics for those?

    Q6)

VUSBIN.CPOUT: According to datasheet, Charge pump output,Power USBLDO3P3 input.

What shall we connect to that pin. Only cap to gnd like shown on the left or output rail like on the right?

We see lots of unknown things on the TI forum regarding this issue. They placed a switch controlled by a GPIO or something.

I am providing those links below:

Can you please clarify this issue? Also a referance schematics would be nice."

    Thanks,
    Murat Ilhan.

PS. I can send the elated diagrams and schematics to whom picks up these questions.
  • Hi Murat,

The TPS65951 is a derivative of the TPS65950 so you can start with some of the reference ducuments below to help you in term of schematic...Thanks Tuan

  • Thanks for the links Tuan.

I have forwarded them to our customer. I will be awaiting for your answers to their questions then.

    Thanks again,

    Murat Ilhan.

  • Hello Tuan,

Have you had a chance to look into the questions from our customer? They said they have gone through the links you have provided and awaiting the answers to their questions.

    Thanks,

    Murat.

  • Hi Murat,

I was thinking that those links would help them answer their questions and if there are additional then we can answer them.

    Thanks Tuan

  • Hi Murat,

    Please see my answers:

    1. VPROG if should be connected to GND when not used. This is for internal EEPROM programing (page 13 of the specification)
    2. VPRECH is an output and it's connected 1uF to ground. The signal that you talked about USBCHRG_STATZ is open colector type output from the charger then it is pull up to VPRECH.
    3. MANU_BRIX is a digital output for battery removal detection. It does not need pull up from data sheet
    4. DP,DN,ID: These are USB OTG signals do not need external pull up/pull down. It is built in on the part (page 115 of the specification)
    5. ADCIN0 and ADCIN1 are used for sensing the battery type and battery temperature if you are using a battery then it's a feature for you to detect the battery status. Please read the specification on this.
    6. VUSBIN.CPOUT: Please see the post that you mentioned on E2E:

    Thanks Tuan
  • Thanks Tuan.
    Have a nice day,
    Murat.
