TCI6630K2L: K2L Power consumption and UCD9090 dying gasp

Part Number: TCI6630K2L

Hello,

The attached screenshot is from K2L EVM schematics pg-5. So the 25W is for K2L processor.

Can I take K2L processor power as 15.2W (K2L) from TCI6630K2L.xlsx (k2L power calculation sheet)? Kindly confirm..

What is the measured K2L processor actual power consumption with UCD9090 tool/ SW ?

Regards,

Sumathi

  • Hello,

In the EVM this a max case, to size the power supplies.

Under the TCI6630k2l and 66ak2l06 there is a power estimation spreadsheet. The usage of peripherals and processor speed determine the current draw. If you wanted to measure the input power, you can isolate the 12v+ and 12v- minus in the input cable, and use a clamp on ammeter to get a power measurement.

Since the einfochips EVM was designed there are newer PMICs available that can have different integrated features, and more power efficiency.

  • Hi Joe,

    Thank You for the support.

As per TCI6630k2l power estimation spreadsheet we are getting 15.1W. Could you pls confirm whether this is the value when all the cores and peripherals used with max core frequency. We require to implement dying gasp & Graceful shutdown. Can UCD9090 be used for this function (graceful shutdown). Any hardware changes to be made in TI EVM for UCD9090 for this application.

Regarding PMIC, "PMICs available that can have different integrated features, and more power efficiency". currently we are using the same voltage dc dc regulators as in TI K2L EVM. But we require all dc-dc to be >90% efficiency. Kindly could you pls let me know some parts.

  • Hello,
This EVM was designed in 2014. There are selector guides for the power subsystem at " www.ti.com/.../slvt145r.pdf ".
Only the CVDD rail requires Smart Reflex voltage control to save power. This is the 1.0v supply. If the Smart Reflex Code DAC, or PMBus power control is used, a different converter can be used. As an example, there are now high current Multiphase DCDC converters that have better power regulation, and higher efficiency.

You can ask power supply questions in the Power Management E2E forum your request for modernized power subsystem, and attach the EVM schematic. If you are building many boards, redesign of the power supply subsystem is common. If you are designing this board, or do few power subsystem designs, I would research the exact part numbers on the TI website, if there are replacements other than the CVDD supply that would work. The CVDD supply has a (Smart Reflex) dynamic voltage setpoint.

  • Typically the TCI6630K2L is not used with all peripherals and all processors running at high utilization. 15W is a typical small cell case.
I would leave a 20-25% margin in your power design for each rail.
