There have been lots of big advancements in the smart grid market in the past month, covering many countries and regions. The TI Smart Grid team has been very busy gearing up for the European Utility Week (EUW) in Amsterdam in October – so stay tuned to this blog for more information!

Here are a few Smart Grid highlights from around the globe:

Brazil

Eletropaulo, the biggest power distributor in Brazil, announced it will invest $36 million through 2015 to implement a smart grid. The country’s largest smart grid project will aim to cut electricity theft and tampering. The project will include the installation of 60,000 meters with wireless connectivity to help utility authorities monitor and track power consumption. The wireless technology will let Eletropaulo identify when customers are stealing power and can remotely shut off their services.

Denmark

The smart meter rollout in Europe continues – with Denmark announcing all homes in that country will have smart meters installed by 2020. Currently, approximately 50 percent of residential buildings have a smart meter, so the new plan will ensure each and every home in that country. Authorities believe the smart meters will result in consumers using less power, and consumers with heat pumps and electric cars are expected to save the most because of electricity savings. This will also help usher in a larger market for smart home appliances with the Internet of Things (IoT).

A major power line communication (PLC) milestone

The PRIME Alliance is set to reach a major milestone for meter deployments – 2.5 million meters installed in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia! Congrats to the PRIME Alliance! Check out the PRIME Alliance website for a live count towards 2,500,000!
