Almost a month ago, we blogged about being a finalist for a major industry award. Well, the results are out and TI's Smart Data Concentrator came out on top!

Last night, we received the ACE Award in the "Ultimate Products: Reference Design" category from EE Times and EDN magazines. It is such an honor for our team to receive such a prestigious award.

Are you familiar with our Smart Data Concentrator reference design? If not, here's what convinced the judges that our smart grid product was the best:

The Smart Data Concentrator reference design from Texas Instruments meets the changing requirements of the utility industry. The smart grid needed a scalable, flexible and integrated system to connect, manage and gather usage data from thousands of residential and commercial e-meters. This design provides the ultimate level of flexibility and scalability with numerous performance, cost and connectivity options to support many worldwide smart grid standards.

TI designed the Smart Data Concentrator around its powerful Sitara™ AM335x processor family.  Through flexible peripherals, the Sitara-processor-based design supports the most wired and wireless connectivity options on the market. This means the next generation of data concentrators can easily support Sub-1GHz, general packet radio service, ZigBee, Wi-Fi, near field communication and multiple power line communication (PLC) standards. Configuring the accompanying PLC system-on-module with TI’s C2000 microcontroller means developers can support PLC software stacks including PRIME, G3, or IEEE P1901.2 in as little as 10 minutes. Other integrated communication interfaces like Ethernet, USB and UARTs enable quick and easy connectivity to other systems on the grid.

This reference design was not only designed with the utility industry in mind, it was actually tested in the field to ensure it exceeds their needs for robust automated meter reading (AMR), advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), and sensor network automation applications. The design includes TI’s isolation, ESD protection, and power management solutions to meet the highest levels of industrial reliability.

The extensive Linux software development kit includes fully customizable, pre-written code that eliminates months of writing and tweaking. It also includes other resources such as network protocols and applications like DLMS/COSEM so developers can customize their products for multiple regional and global standards.

TI’s customers attest that the advanced hardware and software integrated into the Smart Data Concentrator design has reduced their development time by up to nine months.
