Our friends over on TI's Think.Innovate. blog recently asked Markus Staeblein, General Manager of our Smart Grid and Energy solutions team, to discuss why the future depends on a smart electricity grid.

Wind and solar are some of the newer components used for powering our grid. Individually, they are each inventions that help make our world “greener,” but we don’t always consider that they are all connected to electricity grids --most of which were built decades ago.  Here is where the challenges start.

The grid must be able to measure, communicate, monitor and manage. It must be able to use the energy we have today more efficiently. It must be able to communicate to itself and to energy providers to make better decisions on how we use the energy we have – and this is taking place on every continent on Earth. TI continues to work on the next generation of technology that can measure energy and process the measuring data to turn it into information that can be securely communicated to energy providers who make decisions in real-time. The alternative – our electricity grid being the “old computer” not enabling us the full excitement and performance of our new video games– is not a viable option for the future.
