The DRV8823EVM does not include stepper motor control.
The DRV8821EVM does include stepper motor control. The code for the DRV8821EVM could be modified to send serial commands instead of STEP pulses.

The DRV8821EVM can drive a stepper motor with no changes.
The DRV8823EVM was designed to drive brushed motors. The code can be modified to drive a stepper motor without the GUI. If you do so, drive the stepper motor in full step mode.

Sorry for the confusion. The DRV8823EVM would be to evaluate some of the simpler functions of the device. Most would then move to their own PCB for more indepth testing.
The DRV8821EVM does provide support for a basic stepping profile.
