INA228_237_238EVM: Firmware Update Unsuccessful

I'm currently using INA228 EVM with SCB connected with it. After GUI showing the status of "device connected", pop up message showing "firmware update required". After selecting "load firmware" option, 4 LEDs (D1, D2, D3 & D4) on SCB blink for three times and OFF, error message of "Flash Unsuccessful" shown.

Had tried this approach:
- Send the command 'bsl' on the SCB's USB Serial (COM) port. Same behavior as the LEDs blinking and USB is disconnected then.

It is possible that there is a driver issue or a USB hub issue. Per the thread above, ensure that the drivers are installed correctly. Also, try plugging the USB connector into a different port (if you are using a pc, try a port on the back of the pc).

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for the reply. I had tried the e2e thread shared, but it doesn't work and same issue happens.
Other than that, I'm not using an PC, I had tried plugging into different USB port in same laptop and tried with different laptop USB port.
Similarly, that doesn't work as well.

Ok, can you try to put the EVM in DFU mode manually first? Following these instructions:

Before launching the GUI, plug in the SCB (with EVM connected) and enter DFU mode with the test points (ensure the LEDs stay off).
Then launch the GUI and close the README.md popup.
1. You should see a box that says "No SCB controller detected". Close this box.
2. The homepage should say "DEVICE DISCONNECTED" and have a red icon.
Go to File -> Program Device...

Note that if a firmware update fails for any reason, then the MCU will need to be power cycled before it will work again.

If this doesn't work, then let me know what version of windows you are using and what the device manager shows as connected when in DFU mode (ie, tiva or stellaris, etc.)

Hi Mitch,
I am helping Yee Yong to make the EVM work.

I see the same behaviour as him:

-I've tried the steps until File--> Program Device. This does not work, because my button is greyed out

My windows is Windows 10

Another funny thing... I went back and opened GUI 2.0.0, and it works.

GUI 2.1.0 does not. Perhaps this is a good starting point?

Just to clarify, when you connect to 2.0.0, you can go to file->program device, and it updates properly, but then when you connect to GUI 2.1.0 (after a power cycle of updating to 2.0.0), then it does not?

Try this: After loading the firmware from 2.0.0, power cycle the EVM then run the 2.1.0 GUI. It will prompt you update the firmware, click update. If this fails, then click connect again on the bottom left corner (so that the homepage shows a green icon), then go to file -> program device.

If this does not work, try reinstalling the driver. I notice that from your screenshot there is a warning sign next to the driver. When updating the driver, put the device in DFU mode first, then manually associate it with the boot_usb.inf file as shown in this FAQ: https://e2e.ti.com/support/data-converters-group/data-converters/f/data-converters-forum/914940/faq-how-do-i-resolve-pamb-evm-connectivity-and-or-driver-installation-issues

With GUI 2.0.0, I do not have to update the firmware, and it works straight out of the box.
With GUI 2.0.0, File->Program Device does not work:

I then associate the boot_usb.inf file, and the warning sign is gone:

but Program Device through both GUI2.0.0 and 2.1.0 are still unsuccessful. But I can still use GUI 2.0.0 without any updates.

And if it helps, the Firmware is 1.0.0.2 it seems.

I think I have found the culprit. It's the Wireless Mouse Receiver!

I unplugged the receiver, then the firmware is updated successfully. Who knows a firmware update requires more stringent signal integrity than a continuous update plot.
