INA190: Using INA190 for motor low side current sense

Part Number: INA190
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA301, INA180, INA185,

Can this be used for motor low-side current sense? If not, why?

  • Hello T. Coyle,

The INA190 could be used for motor low-side current sensing, but will most likely not be the optimal solution. Sensing peak motor current can require high BW, high slew rate, and short output settling times, and the INA190 was not optimized for these characteristics. The INA190 was designed for dc precision and low power. I would definitely choose the INA180, INA185 or INA301 over the INA190 when it comes to AC performance.

Now your system might work with the INA190 sensing low-side motor current because the speed is within INA190 BW, the on-time is within the INA190 settling time and slew rate, but most likely this will not be the case. However, you can always try with the INA190EVM or INA190 TINA model which can be downloaded from our website.
