INA128U Instrumentation amp output

Hi,
Can the output of the INA128U be shorted continuously without damage?

I am using instrumentation amp INA128U powered by +/-15 volts.
The INA128U provides a signal to a circuit that can only accept 8 volts maximum.
Can I place a 5 volt zener directly on the output of the INA128U to limit the voltage?

In our circuit, during normal operation the output of the INA128U is in the range of +/-2 volts. But if our sensor input to the INA128U is wired incorrectly, the output of the INA128U can go to +15V.  So I need to protect the circut driven by the INA128U and make sure that the INA128U will not be damaged if I add a zener to limit the output voltage.
Thanks

  • Hello Lee,

The absolute maximum rating for output current is continuous, but I would still recommend trying to limit that current by placing a resistor on the output.  You may want to add a pad during your layout.  Please note that the output will also be limited by the forward voltage of the diode, which may make your -2V output challenging.
