XTR110 will not start

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: XTR110

I have several XTR110 ICs on pc boards that will not put out 4mA when powered up.  If I touch the Vref_sense pin (12), the output will start.  I have resoldered all the pins and checked all the connections.

The circuit is connected exactly like the circuit in Figure 1 of the data sheet, but with a 12 volt zener from pins 1&13 to pin 14.

Is there a certain ramp time of VCC that is essential for the output to start working?

I have searched for application notes regarding this and could not find any.

Thank you for your time.

Mark

  • Further investigation shows that Vref_out is only at 3.6 Vdc, instead of 10 Vdc.   Can you tell me what may cause this?

  • Hello Mark,

Thank you for your question about the XTR110, and welcome to the TI E2E forums! I am looking into your startup issue. Can you please provide the markings on the package of the device?

  • Hello again Mark,

I believe I know what's causing the XTR110 to not start, but I need the date code on the device to verify. Can you please provide it?

    Best regards,

  • Mark,

Thank you for the date code. The XTR110 devices you received are from a date range that is known to have start-up issues when the voltage reference is loaded. I have attached a copy of the letter we sent to customers when the issue was discovered and corrected in August of 2009.

We apologize for this inconvenience. Please contact your distributor or local field sales representative (if applicable) to initiate the return and replacement process.

    Best regards,

    Ian Williams

  • 1.   I  have about 30 of these already on pc boards for an order shipping to China.  I need replacements for these.

    2.  I need information on how to decifer the date codes, and what date code the problem was first fixed on, so that I can insure our vendor does not install any more defective ICs.

More pc boards are currently in production, so please get back with me asap.

    Thank you.

  • Mark,

I understand. We will work to resolve this issue quickly for you, but let's continue the discussion off the forums. Please e-mail me at ian@ti.com.

The third and fourth pages of the document I attached in my previous post explain our syntax for ship track codes and lot trace codes. On the packaging of most devices, we use a code that follows the syntax YMLLLLS, where Y = year, M = month, LLLL = independent assembly number and S = assembly site code.

All parts with date codes of August 2009 or later are fully compliant.

  • Hello Ian,

I am a final year undergraduate student and I am using an XTR 110 to convert 1-5V to 4-20mA. This current will be given to a Watson Smith I/P converter which converts 4-20mA to 3-15psi pressure using a constant 20 psi input.

We are extremely low on budget since we have already purchased many expensive components for our control system.

When we tried the XTR 110, for the first time yesterday it did not give any current at all though we varied the full range of input voltage. To be on the safe side we used the Diagram 1 ofthe data sheet and connections were set up for 0-10V and 4-20mA output. But still no response.

What was more puzzling that pins 13,15,3 even though shorted with +10V Reference  were giving different outputs.

    Pin 15= 13.3 V

    Pin 13= 9.7 V

    Pin 3= 3.3V

Can you please help us? I hope its some manufacturing defect as you have said in the posts above. I am not sure if we will be able to purchase another IC again, but this IC is crucial component in our project.

    Thank you !

  • Hello Shaival,

Are you shorting pin 13 (Iout) to the voltage reference? If so then you are not using the schematic in Figure 1. Pins 15 and 12 (Vref_force and Vref_sense) are the pins which should be shorted together. Shorting pin 13 to the reference would definitely cause the device to perform improperly, or not at all.

Regarding the lot trace code: could you please attach an image of the device package which shows the markings?

    Best regards,
    Ian Williams

  • Hello Ian,

Thank you for your reply. Soon after my post, I realised about the error I had made. Instead of pin 12 I had typed pin 13.

I was then facing severe password and login problems, and hence could not rectify the error in the post until now.

i want to inform you that I meant pin 12 only, not pin 13. We checked the circuit at least thrice but still no luck.We use a resistor of 270 ohms, and a p-channel MOSFET ( T-220 package).

Sorry for my error in the post.

    Please guide me.

    Thank you.

    SIncerely,

    Shaival.

  • Shaival,

Thank you for clarifying which pins were actually shorted. We have to eliminate any possible errors in the circuit before considering the part itself is behaving improperly.

Per my last post: can you please take a photo of the IC itself, clearly showing the markings?

    Regards,

    Ian

  • Hello Ian,

    Thank you.

I will not be able to attach the picture right away, as the IC is with my colleague.

I will do it as soon as possible.

As for the circuit, we have been implementing it on a breadboard, and are positive that we have been connecting everything properly strictly as per diagram 1.

I will send you the image at the earliest.

Also I read somewhere that the XTR 110 cannot be used in 2-wire applications.

But can I use it to send a current through a electro-mechanical converter which converts current to pressure?

This is what we are going to give the input current to:

  • I spoke to my colleague right now.

He has returned the IC to the dealer temporarily but with no guarantee of exchange.

So I cant have a picture now, but I can re-paste all that was printed on the IC top surface:

  • Shaival,

The markings on that part indicate that it was produced in the mid-90s. Where did you buy the device? I highly recommend you acquire a new part.

The XTR110KP is part of TI's free sample program, which should be fulfilled from current stock. From the XTR110 product folder you can click "Add to Cart" by the listing for XTR110KP, and from there you can login to the sample store.

Please let me know if you still see this issue after trying a new device.

    Best regards,

    Ian Williams

  • Hello Ian,

    Thank you for the information.

I had absolutely no idea about its production year, and hence thank you for bringing it to my notice. I bought this part from an Electronics components dealer in Mumbai.

He has agreed to exchange it.

As for the free sample program, I had tried for last one or two months but I could not add a free sample to my cart. It said "Contact TI Distributor or Sales Office ".

    https://commerce.ti.com/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView

Can you help me out? This is what it shows( Pasted at the end)

Also, I am based in India, so what about the shipping costs involved?

Can you help me, or refer me to someone who can answer my query?

As for the IC, If the exchanged part also does not give results I will contact you once again.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Shaival.

  • Shaival,

I suppose the TI website detected your location from your computer's IP address and did not give you the option to order samples through the normal system. I apologize for the inconvenience.

I will find out who is the proper person to help you acquire samples.

    Best,

    Ian W.

  • Hello Ian,

I will be very grateful if you can help me out with how to order samples, as well as how much the shipping may cost,if any.

    Thank you.
