THS4551: SPICE models

Part Number: THS4551
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TINA-TI, , THS4501, THS4541

I was trying to import PSpice model to use with a commercial simulator and after two hours of wasted time I gave up.

If I don't resolve this soon, I will use a competitor chip, because I don't want to abandon the usual flow/tools and use TINA-TI just to use this chip.

I get that providing a free tool (TINA-TI) is useful to many customers, but Is there any legitimate reason why TI does not provide plain SPICE, Spectre or unencrypted HSPICE models, which can be used in most (all?) high-end commercial simulators, such as HSPICE, Spectre, ADS, Mentor AFS etc?

I already saw on the forum that other people have had a similar problem and resolved it by using a competitor chip.

Please consider this: who is more likely to order more chips - someone using a free tool, or someone using a high-end commercial simulator which costs a LOT?

By providing only a PSpice model, incompatible with high-end simulators, TI effectively pushes away customers having an established design flow to competitors which provide plain SPICE models.

Ultimately, this translates to lost revenue - all because of a decision to provide only PSpice models.

  • Well Dusan,

The product folder does show a download list of PSpice type models - the .lib one opens in my version of LTSpice, but not sure if it actually runs.

"High end simulators" hard to interpret that - hard to support all of those with finite manhours. Is there a specific one you are trying to use.

Which part are you thinking of, ADA4940? The ADA4945 is a later release, but relatively high quiescent.

  • Hello Dusan,

Can you provide more details? Which simulator are you using and what issues are you encountering exactly?

  • Hello.

I used imported model for the THS4541 and also THS4501 in LTspice and didn't meet any problems.I didn't try the THS4551 but I assume it is the same.

  • Thank you for your response.

The point is that plain SPICE - not PSpice, LTSpice, etc. or propriety variant such as Spectre - would work in ANY simulator and cover all customers.

The provided PSpice models can't be translated to be used in high-end simulator, and that is a problem.

  • Hello Dusan,

Can you clarify which version of the model you are trying to import here? Is it the .lib file that is attached in the forum post that you linked or the 2020 model found on the product page? Are you able to provide the simulator you are using and what errors you are running into?

    Best,
