TAS6421Q1EVM: The board doesn't work

Part Number: TAS6421Q1EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS6421-Q1

Hi,

I bought the eval kit TAS6421Q1EVM to test I2S audio amplifier.

I do the same as documentation (www.ti.com/.../slou415.pdf part 3.5.1) :

  • Power supply of 14.4V
  • Usb connected to PC
  • All switch UP
  • Connect à 4ohm load

The PC detect the card as sound card, but when I play sound, there is nothing on the board.

So I install the application PurePath Console and try to use the dedicated app, but the app show that the board is offline (as you can see ont the picture).

On the board (as you can see on the picture), the LED WARN is on.

I don't know why the board doesn't work. Do I need to do something else ? Or the board is broken ?

I need to check quikly if the audio amplifier is OK for us to integrated him in new pcb design.

Best regards,

  • Jeremy,

The board is probably working.  You need to get the PPC3 GUI connected.  Sometimes computers have a difficult time.  With the EVM on, you can close PPC3 and open it again.  Sometimes this will make the GUI recognize the amplifier is there.

After is it recognized, you will need to clear any warnings or faults before you place the channel into play mode.  This will allow for the audio to play from the USB.

Make sure you read the User Guide.

  • Hi Gregg,

I try to launch many times the software PPC (before connect board, after, etc ...). The software is never connected to board, the board always have the LED "WARN" on and the app always show "TAS6421 - Offline".

I read the user manual (SLOU415 : https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/slou415/slou415.pdf) and in the page 7 is written there is a connect box in the right hand corner, but I don't see them in the screenshot and in my app.

I also search the button "CONNECT" on the bottom left corner (as expained on page 11), but I don't have "Connect" or "Disconnect" button on my app.

And I see in page 17 (figure 17) there is a button disconnect on the bottom left corner. But on the other screenshot, this button doesn't exist, and in my app, the button doesn't appear.

Is there many versions of the software (I have the version 3.2.1 build 306 for pure path console and 3.0.2 for the app TAS6421) ? Is there a problem with my driver (even if the USB sound card is well detected as TI USB Audio UAC2.0) ?

    Version of purepath console

  • Jeremy,

I understand the frustration. Do not be concerned about the "WARN" LED at the moment.  This is normal during powering up and needs to be cleared with the GUI.  But, we can't get to this step yet, since you cannot connect to the board.

There is a switch on the board, S4, that is is called "XMOS ENABLE".  Please make sure it is in the UP position to enable the XMOS as it it the device that communicates between the USB and our TAS6421-Q1.

  • Hi Gregg,

The switch S4 is up (I try in down position and the sound card on PC disappear).

A coworker installed the software and tried to use the evalkit. He has the same problem.

So we decide to change the reference of amplifier and not use this because is too complicated to evaluate the chip.

  • Jeremy,

The IC is not complicated.  I believe the board has a bad XMOS device on it.  We can send you a new evaluation board to replace this one.

  • Hi Gregg,

I accept to change the board and try a new evaluation board (I hope it's the XMOS that's causing the problem).
How do you want to change the evaluation kit ? You contact me in private message or by mail ?
