PCM5121: Digital volume control

Hi Expert,

in the PCM5121 datasheet, the digital volume control is outside the mini-DSP process flow, it's position is before I2S data enter into miniDSP, is this correct?

but below description in the datasheet is confusing me, why the digital volume control can not influence the DOUT since it's position is before miniDSP?

Hello, I consulted with a colleague as the description from data sheet is very specific on saying it only affects the analog output of the DAC. Most probably that is the case and the block diagram is incorrect. it is most likely located at the output of the mini-DSP just before the interpolation filter, not at the input.

However all these PCM5x devices have the same diagram, if there is error it’s in all of them…

Not sure if we can get any insight of the internal design of these devices. Sorry we can not provide a more concrete answer at this time but I will try to see if I can find the right person to correct either the diagram or the note- as it is appropriate and will let you know as well. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Hi Anderson,

I will check with a colleague who probably know the answer of which statement or diagram is correct. He is in different time zone so it might take a while to find if it is indeed before DSP or not. I don't think changing the volume control's position is an option.

any feedback from the colleague? customer need a volume control before DRC, do we have a competitive choice comparing with PCM5121 but without cost up?
