PCM6480-Q1: Spec inquiries for A2B

Part Number: PCM6480-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCMD3140

Hello team,

I’d like to check if PCM6480-Q1 is compatible with A2B interface. Would you please answer the followings?

-. For PDMDIN/CLK pins, is it capable of interfacing with A2B format which is output from DMIC (with A2B IC)?

-. If it’s possible, all four DMICs can be connected to one channel of either PDMDIN1/CLK1 or PDMDIN2/CLK2?

-. For TDM output pins, can the A2B data send to the audio Amp? Is the A2B data compatible with TDM format?

-. So, can PCM6480-Q1 support the following configuration?

:  G-sensors and DMICs -> A2B format -> PCM6840-Q1 -> A2B format -> Audio Amp

Thanks,

Sam Lee

  • Hi Sam

    Apologies for the delay,

    1. Yes, if A2B data is communicating via I2S/TDM data or supplying PDM data, PDMDIN/CLK pins should support.

    2.  Each channel can support up to 2 DMIC inputs (d/s 8.3.7) while sharing PDMCLK

    3. Yes, we have AIN/DIN audio smart amps that accept I2S/TDM data

    4. Can you confirm that A2B format is I/O of I2S/TDM data? If so,PCM6480 should support following configuration.

I will confirm the above points with ADC expert tomorrow.

    Regards,

  • Hello Daveon,

    Thank you for your reply.

I don’t have much knowledge about A2B interface, so I’m wondering if the A2B data could be sent in the same as TDM format.

According to A2B device datasheet, the A2B format seems to have their own frame where it’s not matched with TDM. So, PCM6480-Q1’s DMIC input seems not to be compatible with A2B data because it's a different format from TDM. Is it correct?

    Thanks,

    Sam Lee

  • Hi Sam,

Can you provide A2B device datasheet? Does the A2B IC recover the PDM data and CLK as well?

  • Hi Daveon,

I'm just referencing one datasheet (AD242x) on the web for what A2B is. Would you pleae check it?

    Thanks,

    Sam Lee

  • Hi Sam,

    Correction to my original reply:

    1. No, our ADCs can not transmit data in A2B format. Only and A2B transceiver, AD242x, can interface from the main transceiver to subordinate transceivers:

    * Shown in this diagram, the purpose of the A2B transceiver is to ultimately send Audio I/F over X distance in a car thus supporting Y amount of audio devices following each subordinate transceiver.

The A2B transceiver and TI device both can input DMIC data & clock meaning both configurations are supported:

    • 4DMIC>>PCM6480-Q1>>Main A2B Transceiver>> (Y #) Subordinate>> Audio Amp
    • 4DMIC>>Main A2B Transceiver>> (Y #) Subordinate>> Audio Amp

TI ADC is only needed for AIN (G-sensor) in this case, Transceiver can receive 4DMIC inputs over 1 channel simultaneously. We do have a TI ADC that accepts 4DMIC over 1 channel, PCMD3140, but transceiver already does this function.

Scenario: G sensor + (4 DMIC Input over 1 channel) to A2B transceiver

    Solution #1: 4DMICs>>Main A2B Transceiver>> (Y #) Subordinate>> Audio Amp

                      +  AIN >>PCM6240Q1>>Main A2B Transceiver>> (Y #) Subordinate>> Audio Amp

    Solution #2: AIN + 4DMICs>>6480-Q1>>Main A2B Transceiver>> (Y #) Subordinate>> Audio Amp

    * The only drawback here is that 6480 can only support 2DMIC on one channel at a time

    2. No changes, Our ADC supports PDM MIC input, all DMICS can share the same PDMCLK but only 2 data lines can be on a singular channel, therefore each channel can support up to 2 DMIC inputs (d/s 8.3.7) (Figure 8-20) while sharing PDMCLK

    3. Yes, A2B can receive and send audio data. So, it can send audio to speaker amp.

Let me know if this helps!

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Daveon,

Thank you for your clarification and help.
